hadn't really been seen to best effect on either start since his debut but, back on turf, was seen to much better advantage this time, benefiting from the longer trip and producing the level of performance anticipated after Doncaster, with more still to come; pressed leader, went with enthusiasm, led 2f out, edged right entering straight, driven soon after, kept going well; he was cut into around 16/1 for the Derby but the Prix du Jockey Club, mentioned by connections post-race, appeals as being a more suitable target, not really bred to need any further than this.

ran at least as well as last time, seeing out the trip fine, a useful colt but looking no more than that at this stage; tracked pace, shaken up over 2f out, every chance over 1f out, kept on.

showed improved form, not only benefiting from the longer trip but leaving the impression that he'll be suited by further still, stamina in his pedigree (brother to a Chester Cup winner); mid-field, ridden over 2f out, stayed on final 1f.

proved to be a disappointment in first-time cheekpieces, looking far from straightforward under pressure, the track a potential excuse but he'd also been wayward on debut as a juvenile; soon led, not settle fully, pushed along 3f out, headed 2f out, hung left and looked awkward, weakened final 1f.

was well backed, his Newbury form boosted by the third here yesterday, but failed to meet expectations, seeming really ill at ease on the track, softer conditions perhaps against him, too; dwelt, raced off the pace and went in snatches, struggling over 2f out, hung left early in straight, kept on but never a threat; he's worth another chance given previous impressions.

easy to back upped in trip, has had plenty of racing, including on ground softer than good, but just ran poorly; raced off the pace, short of room briefly over 2f out, ridden soon after, made no impression.

A race that hasn't often lived up to its billing as a Derby trial and this years' renewal doesn't look like breaking that cycle, El Drama's performance up to standard but it's form that lacks strength in depth, the race rather falling apart in fact with 3 of the first 4 in the market failing to cover themselves in glory; the pace wasn't strong early but increased from halfway, making for a reasonable test.

EL DRAMA (IRE) hadn't really been seen to best effect on either start since his debut but, back on turf, was seen to much better advantage this time, benefiting from the longer trip and producing the level of performance anticipated after Doncaster, with more still to come; pressed leader, went with enthusiasm, led 2f out, edged right entering straight, driven soon after, kept going well; he was cut into around 16/1 for the Derby but the Prix du Jockey Club, mentioned by connections post-race, appeals as being a more suitable target, not really bred to need any further than this.
