was the second Tizzard-trained 6-y-o to land this prize in the last 3 renewals, just like Native River justifying really strong support from a favourable mark following the Hennessy (now Ladbrokes Trophy), in his case 4 lb lower than at Newbury having finished second there under a penalty for his reappearance win, as expected relishing his first crack at a marathon distance, even more in the tank had it been required; chased leaders, not fluent ninth, untidy twelfth, close up 4 out, jumped on next, looked in control last before dossing on the run-in but was always holding on, seeing the trip out thoroughly; there was plenty of talk of the Grand National afterwards but that can wait for one who's only rising 7, better to go down the Gold Cup route in an increasingly open-looking year, not needing to improve much on this to hit the frame in an average renewal.

progressed again under a penalty (officially 3 lb well-in), no sign of his win in the trial less than 3 weeks earlier having taken the edge off him at all, and for all the winner seemed to have a bit up his sleeve had it been required, Ramses de Teillee deserves a lot of credit for recovering from a jolting error just as the front trio started to press on to push him close, the trip clearly holding no fears for him; tracked pace, not fluent sixteenth, loomed up approaching 4 out, bad mistake there, switched after next, rallied run-in, held late on; only rising 7, like the winner, he probably wouldn't want turning out quickly but he'd be a good fit for the Grand National Trial at Haydock, a race that would give him time to get over these exertions.

has returned better than ever this season and emerges with a huge amount of credit in trying to give weight to a pair of younger, most progressive rivals, this better than anything he's produced previously over the longest trip he's tackled; close up, jumped well, pressed leader from tenth, edged ahead leaving back straight, pressed on before 5 out, headed 3 out, held last but stuck to task well; for all he goes well in the mud, he isn't ground dependent as such (reappearance win came on good to soft) and, unexposed granted a marathon test, appeals as a potential Grand National contender.

back in a handicap, shaped well having a first crack at a marathon trip, ridden very differently to the front trio and leaving the impression she probably should have got a little closer; patiently ridden, crept closer approaching home turn, kept on gradually without threatening principals, best of those held up; this opens up plenty more options for her.

All 20 ran. Fences: 22.

Winning Owner: Mr J. P. Romans

Time: 7m 48.4s Closing Sectional: (2.55f): 40.00s (101.2%)

Youth very much came to the fore in the second Welsh Grand National of 2018, the finish fought out by a pair of 6-y-os, the winner matching his stablemate Native River 2 years earlier in that respect - L'Aventure in 2005 and Halcon Genelardais the following year the only others to have won at that age in the history of the race - and the form has a very solid look, the first and third both racing from marks in the 150s with big-race handicap form already to their name, split by the winner of the trial, the 3 of them coming clear from 5 out and seeing the trip out thoroughly in a well-run race; the fact it proved so difficult to get involved from off the pace is a symptom of the course/race to some extent, though equally reflects the calibre of those among the leading group.

ELEGANT ESCAPE (IRE) was the second Tizzard-trained 6-y-o to land this prize in the last 3 renewals, just like Native River justifying really strong support from a favourable mark following the Hennessy (now Ladbrokes Trophy), in his case 4 lb lower than at Newbury having finished second there under a penalty for his reappearance win, as expected relishing his first crack at a marathon distance, even more in the tank had it been required; chased leaders, not fluent ninth, untidy twelfth, close up 4 out, jumped on next, looked in control last before dossing on the run-in but was always holding on, seeing the trip out thoroughly; there was plenty of talk of the Grand National afterwards but that can wait for one who's only rising 7, better to go down the Gold Cup route in an increasingly open-looking year, not needing to improve much on this to hit the frame in an average renewal.

RAMSES DE TEILLEE (FR) progressed again under a penalty (officially 3 lb well-in), no sign of his win in the trial less than 3 weeks earlier having taken the edge off him at all, and for all the winner seemed to have a bit up his sleeve had it been required, Ramses de Teillee deserves a lot of credit for recovering from a jolting error just as the front trio started to press on to push him close, the trip clearly holding no fears for him; tracked pace, not fluent sixteenth, loomed up approaching 4 out, bad mistake there, switched after next, rallied run-in, held late on; only rising 7, like the winner, he probably wouldn't want turning out quickly but he'd be a good fit for the Grand National Trial at Haydock, a race that would give him time to get over these exertions.

YALA ENKI (FR) has returned better than ever this season and emerges with a huge amount of credit in trying to give weight to a pair of younger, most progressive rivals, this better than anything he's produced previously over the longest trip he's tackled; close up, jumped well, pressed leader from tenth, edged ahead leaving back straight, pressed on before 5 out, headed 3 out, held last but stuck to task well; for all he goes well in the mud, he isn't ground dependent as such (reappearance win came on good to soft) and, unexposed granted a marathon test, appeals as a potential Grand National contender.

RONS DREAM back in a handicap, shaped well having a first crack at a marathon trip, ridden very differently to the front trio and leaving the impression she probably should have got a little closer; patiently ridden, crept closer approaching home turn, kept on gradually without threatening principals, best of those held up; this opens up plenty more options for her.

RAZ DE MAREE (FR) 2 lb higher than when successful in the previous renewal of this, had presumably been aimed at a repeat all along as he showed more than previously this season, albeit without ever getting competitive and his chance in races like this is surely gone; held up, not fluent first, struggling leaving back straight, plugged on straight, never landed a blow on principals.
