Glengouly produced the biggest shock in the history of a race that has been a feature at this meeting since the 'sixties, running from 7 lb out of the handicap yet still off the lowest BHA mark for a winner this century, the withdrawal of declared top-weight GA Law due to unsuitable ground coming too late to allow the weights to rise, the favourite Jagwar and GA Law's stable-companion Colonel Harry left at the head of the handicap off a mark of just 148; the winner got a very good ride and proved willing, factors that made a difference to the outcome of a race unsurprisingly run in an ordinary time.

GLENGOULY (FR) built on the encouragement of his previous 2 runs over 2m, running from 7 lb wrong but benefiting greatly from a very good ride; made all, jumped fluently, travelled well, kicked on entering straight, shaken up 2 out, not fluent last, kept on willingly, ridden out; his yard deserves plenty of credit for revitalising him to such an extent, though a steep rise back up the weights is inevitable after this and it won't be every time he gets things all his own way up front.

VINCENZO (FR) matched his Paddy Power form in taking second again, with no obvious excuse on the day, well positioned and the closest to the winner in the straight but unable to get by a game rival; prominent, travelled well, tracked pace entering straight, shaken up after 2 out, pressing when mistake last, kept on, edged left, not quicken final 100 yds.

JAGWAR (FR) who'd missed the Paddy Power due to unsuitable ground, shaped encouragingly after 9 months off, coming from a poor position the way the race unfolded, the pair that beat him ridden much more prominently; held up, took keen hold, pecked sixth, still plenty to do entering straight, not clear run 2 out, shaken up after, third when not fluent last, kept on; will be all the sharper for his first outing of the season and well up to winning a similar event before long.

KIM ROQUE (FR) shaped as if still in good form, not ideally placed the way the race developed and running from 3 lb out of the handicap as well; held up, mistake twelfth, effort entering straight, chased leaders between last 2, not quicken last; still early days for his new yard and remains capable of better.

HOE JOLY SMOKE ran respectably, the run of the race perhaps not suiting him quite so well as the Paddy Power had, also finding some trouble as he made his effort; waited with, not settle fully, not fluent 4 out, not clear run before 2 out, ridden after, one paced last.

IMPERIAL SAINT (FR) failed to improve to any great extent for his reappearance, despite being well positioned when the leader kicked for home; prominent, disputed second 3 out, shaken up straight, lost place when hampered 2 out.

IL RIDOTO (FR) was away from testing ground this time but fared no better than in the Paddy Power, his effort all rather flat; prominent, shaken up after 3 out, mistake 2 out, weakened and hung left after.

COLONEL HARRY (IRE) was below form, going backwards from his reappearance, a race over the National fences still prone to take plenty of getting over; waited with, shaken up 3 out, weakened 2 out.

MARTATOR (FR) wasn't in the same form as last time, never competitive after an early mistake; in rear, mistake second, not fluent tenth, mistake 3 out, shaken up soon after, left behind.

ES PERFECTO (IRE) fared little better than on his return, soon left toiling when the leader kicked for home; in touch, pushed along after twelfth, in touch again 3 out, shaken up home turn, lost place quickly, slow 2 out.
