hadn't done much on his return but was seemingly much sharper for the addition of first-time cheekpieces and revived sufficiently to take advantage of a much-reduced mark, 17 lb lower in the weights than when gaining his last success (at Chepstow in January 2021); in touch, travelled fluently, produced to lead last, drew clear run-in, ridden out; it's hard to know whether he'll continue in this sort of form, but at least there are more veterans handicaps at around this trip for him this season, the Final of the series being at Haydock at the end of March and featuring a £10,000 bonus for the winner if they've previously been successful in a qualifier.

ideally needs more of an emphasis on stamina, but he was aided by a good gallop at the trip and did as well as could have been expected; raced off the pace, headway after 3 out, stayed on straight, went second final 50 yds; he hasn't won for the thick end of 3 years but showed enough here to believe he should be a live contender in the 3m Final at Sandown in January, that race often run in conditions that suit sluggards.

remains in good form, in the end paying the price to some extent for hassling the leader at a good pace, the emphasis also more on stamina than when successful over this sort of trip on his previous outing; pressed leader, not fluent tenth, went on approaching 2 out, headed last, tied up final 100 yds.

had something to find from 3 lb out of the weights and was anything but discredited, especially as the stiff finish at this track probably doesn't suit ideally; dropped out, crept closer from 5 out, tracked pace entering straight, pecked 2 out, shaken up after, no response.

The second of this new shorter-distance series was run at a good pace from the word go and resulted in a decisive success for the formerly very smart Cepage, in the frame from a BHA mark of 155 in the December Gold Cup at this meeting at his peak.

CEPAGE (FR) hadn't done much on his return but was seemingly much sharper for the addition of first-time cheekpieces and revived sufficiently to take advantage of a much-reduced mark, 17 lb lower in the weights than when gaining his last success (at Chepstow in January 2021); in touch, travelled fluently, produced to lead last, drew clear run-in, ridden out; it's hard to know whether he'll continue in this sort of form, but at least there are more veterans handicaps at around this trip for him this season, the Final of the series being at Haydock at the end of March and featuring a £10,000 bonus for the winner if they've previously been successful in a qualifier.

SAM BROWN was back in headgear for his debut in a veterans handicap but ideally needs the emphasis more on stamina; chased leaders, outpaced ninth, not fluent eleventh, 4 out, rallied approaching 2 out, plugged on.

UP HELLY AA KING shaped as if needing the run after 10 months off; mid-field, not fluent twelfth, pushed along after next, dropped away after 4 out; likely to be much closer to form next time.
