wasted no time confirming the promise of his luckless return in the Paddy Power, completing the set in that particular handicap double-header following his 2020 success in the November version, 5 lb better off with Midnight Shadow a month on and taking full advantage of both that turnaround at the weights and also that rival having a costly jumping lapse 2 out this time, Coole Cody still in front at that stage and holding his advantage all the way to the line despite going right at the last, forcing the pace around this track again standing him in good stead.
soon led, largely jumped well, quickened soon after 3 out, threatened straight, jumped right last, kept on well, in command final 50 yds

ran better than he had the month before, finishing 4 places closer for one thing despite having had to come from even further back, though he does have a tricky air about him, as such not one to afford chance after chance for apparently doing well tactically; soon in rear, he began to make headway from 3 out (short of room briefly home turn) but carried himself awkwardly all the while, wandering once or twice for all he finished so well he'd got himself into second by the line.

underlined both his toughness and quality as he more than backed up his Paddy Power effort in a losing cause this time from 7 lb higher, showing no ill-effects from that hard race as he gave the sprightly winner most to think about, his mistake 2 out rather than Coole Cody's having a say in the outcome this time; handy, went with enthusiasm, loomed up soon after 3 out, still length down but in midst of making effort when blundered next, forced to switch soon after last, not quicken and collared for second on post.

had given the handicapper plenty to go on but evidently could have been dealt with more harshly than he has been judged on this belated first handicap attempt, running close to his mark despite making one particularly bad error around halfway; soon tracking the pace, he hit the eighth but threw in an even more significant blemish 2 fences later, to his credit getting back into the mix by the home turn and sticking at it until the final 50 yds.

shaped better than he had in the Paddy Power and promises to reveal even more of his old ability this season when the emphasis is less on stamina; patiently ridden, smooth headway out wide from 3 out, quickened approaching next, threatened briefly, effort flattened out; suddenly one to bear in mind again from his much-reduced mark.

failed to build on the promise of his stable debut in the Paddy Power with cheekpieces back on, rising 10 and probably just not taking a second run so soon, given his apparent fragility; settled in touch out wide, took closer order from halfway, ridden from 3 out, faltered next.

isn't yet a veteran but, for now, has seen a once promising chasing career fizzling out, absent another 7 weeks since his reappearance spin over timber and found wanting having raced with the winner/third for a long way; led briefly early, pressed leader after, shaken up after 3 out, dropped away straight.

As if 5 of the Paddy Power Gold Cup field turning up again didn't evoke enough memories of the big race the month prior then the picture on the home turn was basically certified déjà vu, except this time the subsequent race-altering mistake in the straight was made by Midnight Shadow rather than the front-running Coole Cody, the pair eventually split by the pick of the come-from-behind contingent who was also reopposing from November, the lack of 'new blood' in the finish - not to mention Coole Cody becoming the first horse in double figures since the 1970s, and only the third ever, to land the prize - giving the form a rather humdrum feel.

COOLE CODY (IRE) wasted no time confirming the promise of his luckless return in the Paddy Power, completing the set in that particular handicap double-header following his 2020 success in the November version, 5 lb better off with Midnight Shadow a month on and taking full advantage of both that turnaround at the weights and also that rival having a costly jumping lapse 2 out this time, Coole Cody still in front at that stage and holding his advantage all the way to the line despite going right at the last, forcing the pace around this track again standing him in good stead.
