found tackling inferior animals - 4 of them were out of the weights - compared to the best novices around liberating embarking on only his second season over fences, posting a high-class handicap performance in capitalising on that class edge, not putting a foot wrong; soon jumping and travelling well, he pressed the leader early and again at the sixth, jumped on 5 out and hardly came out of second gear, 11 lengths clear for most of the run-in until allowed to coast home; the gap to the very best 2-milers just got narrower but it's hard to ignore how he came up short a few times last season, a similar scenario most likely with a view to the big open graded prizes to come.

revived all of a sudden, exceeding expectations based not only on his unflattering SP, forced into different tactics to usual in a far stronger race than he normally contests, signs perhaps of form with a hole or 2 in it; ridden more patiently, settled mid-field, not fluent seventh, 3 out, rallied from next, took second final 100 yds.

had his winning run ended with sights raised but still coped far better than a similar type in Scardura, even then not seen to best effect, upholding Fontwell form with Ballywood all the same; held up, forced wide throughout, headway when shaken up after 3 out, stayed on out wide straight, went third late on, finished with running left; still only a 5-y-o, he's worth another chance.

seemed no better or worse for a breathing operation returning from 8 months off, running respectably whilst underlining he's no more than averagely treated from a mark in the 160s, both wins last season in weakish small fields; settled mid-field, took closer order 3 out, effort from next, stayed on gradually.

saw his mark rise sharply during a fine first part of the year and came back from 7 months off with a perfectly encouraging sharpener, looking best of the rest for most of the way behind a high-class winner; prominent main group, effort home turn, second when crossing last, no extra late on; he promises to be a fixture in all the big handicaps at this trip and around 2½m.

straight back over fences following another breathing operation, was rather too lit up to last home, running herself out faced with a big ask at the weights (8 lb out of handicap); soon led, took strong hold, clear third, reduced advantage sixth, headed when mistake 5 out, driven from 3 out, rallied until next, no extra.

Taken at face value this could go down as one of the better handicap performances this decade, Rouge Vif defying a BHA mark of 156 with stunning dominance in a well-run race, yet the identity of the runner-up, alongside other factors this early in the season proper, ought to sound a note of caution in post-race talk of lively Champion Chase contender, with a fair few false dawns from similar types on that score in recent years, none of the other second-season chasers in the field delivering to differing degrees.

ROUGE VIF (FR) found tackling inferior animals - 4 of them were out of the weights - compared to the best novices around liberating embarking on only his second season over fences, posting a high-class handicap performance in capitalising on that class edge, not putting a foot wrong; soon jumping and travelling well, he pressed the leader early and again at the sixth, jumped on 5 out and hardly came out of second gear, 11 lengths clear for most of the run-in until allowed to coast home; the gap to the very best 2-milers just got narrower but it's hard to ignore how he came up short a few times last season, a similar scenario most likely with a view to the big open graded prizes to come.

BEAT THE JUDGE (IRE) had his winning run ended with sights raised but still coped far better than a similar type in Scardura, even then not seen to best effect, upholding Fontwell form with Ballywood all the same; held up, forced wide throughout, headway when shaken up after 3 out, stayed on out wide straight, went third late on, finished with running left; still only a 5-y-o, he's worth another chance.
