took advantage of a much-reduced mark on his first outing since leaving Nigel Twiston-Davies after 7 months off; dropped out, smooth headway out wide after 2 out, quickened to lead early in straight, clear when blundered last, threatened after, asserted final 50 yds, another good tactical ride by Brennan; he evidently retains a useful level of ability but there's the feeling he was primed for the day, plus his relative speed counted for plenty in setting him apart from the bunched field as they turned in.

has shaped very well in contrasting staying handicap hurdles on both starts back, showing no ill-effects from a tough race at Haydock but undone by a tactical race that saw him short of room just when he needed to open up; mid-division, shuffled back approaching home turn, not clear run again early in straight, rallied well run-in, went second late on, would have benefited from a stronger gallop; he'll remain of plenty of interest.

wasn't at all disgraced for all he had his winning run ended from a mark another 3 lb higher, sticking in there gamely behind an unexposed runner-up and potentially thrown-in winner after finally getting the better of his long-time private battle with Debestyman; led until joined third, went on again sixth, headed when mistake eighth, rallied from home turn, stayed on.

is shaping up perfectly well, looking better than the distance beaten suggests here, perhaps paying for working to get past Champers On Ice before others challenged; pressed leader, upsides third, disputed lead until sixth, jumped on again eighth, headed early in straight, rallied until final 100 yds, tied up.

had undergone a breathing operation since the spring and was strong in the betting but merely gave echoes of his Stayers' Hurdle effort here, going as if the ability is still there only for a feeble finish to overshadow any positives; mid-division, smooth headway after 3 out, loomed up next, faltered straight, beaten when hung right run-in; he wore blinkers when last seen but his issues still seem physical.

A staying handicap hurdle on a stiff track that for a lot of the latter stages looked set to provide a finish more akin to a short-distance race on the Flat, most still right there as the pace lifted again on the home turn, the test finally seeing a few crack late on after the winner's burst of pace around the outer had given him the initiative.
