third to Altior in a top-notch Supreme in 2016, might have followed that stable companion to Grade 1 success at this meeting in a novice chase, but instead pitched up here after a mid-season change of plan, his performance well up to standard for the race, the Supreme remaining his only defeat over jumps, while his age poses no obstacle to his returning as a major contender in 2018; held up, tanked along, hit fifth, smooth headway before 2 out, led before last, won readily.

belatedly showed himself at least as good as when second in this in 2016, now runner-up 3 times in this race as well as in the Supreme as a novice, these his optimum conditions; held up, travelled well, headway 2 out, chased leader last, kept on well, no impression on winner; he's a remarkable horse, with surely the best Festival record of any horse not to win here, just about as good as ever at the age of 10, time a formidable enemy with regard to going one better.

ran creditably, to a large extent confirming the improvement of his last 2 starts, again attempting to make all but coming up short, needing no excuses; led, mistake 2 out, ridden after, headed before last, faded run-in.

ran respectably, never a threat but only a couple of lengths further behind the third than he had been in the Irish Champion; held up, effort 2 out, kept on, never landed a blow; it would be no surprise were he to be campaigned at Auteuil in the spring, while chasing could be an option next season.

came up short again in a race which just doesn't play to his strengths, his jumping not up to it and lacking the pace required too; close up, not always fluent, outpaced before 2 out; he'd been seriously considered for a run in the Stayers', and it would surely be worth trying him at 3m in the Liverpool Hurdle next month.

had a fair bit to find on form and ran about as well as could have been expected upped in grade; held up, shaken up 2 out, made little impression; he's a smart hurdler who could well make an impact if switched to novice chasing next season.

last seen contesting the Melbourne Cup, wasn't disgraced, in form terms at least, on his first start over hurdles since the 2015 Fighting Fifth, though he was rather let down by his attitude at both ends of the race and looks one to treat with some caution; very slowly into stride, in rear, good progress 2 out, shaken up straight, folded tamely.

kept fresh for this, raced freely and possibly isn't suited by this track, but he left the impression he was amiss more than anything stepping up from handicap company; prominent, close up and still going well 2 out, stopped quickly when shaken up; he'd looked really progressive prior to this.

hadn't been convincing, despite winning all 3 of his races this season, and ran below form faced with his stiffest test of the season, taken round the inside (in contrast to the Baring Bingham last season) and almost the first in trouble; in touch, labouring before 2 out; that he's been fitted with cheekpieces on the last 2 starts isn't encouraging and .it may well be that his attitude is starting to fray a little, no surprise given his sire.

was thrown in at the deep end on just his third start over hurdles, running in this in preference to contesting the Supreme, but went as if all wasn't well after 4 months off; prominent, not always fluent, weakened fifth, pulled up 3 out; he would seem to be pretty fragile and will have a bit to prove when next seen.

The absence of the last 2 winners of this race, Annie Power and Faugheen, had led to much talk about this being a substandard Champion Hurdle, and perhaps overall it was, but in Buveur d'Air it had a winner whose performance looks well up to the recent standard for the race and one likely to continue to be a leading player in the division, a certain irony in the fact that both Buveur d'Air and Yanworth had other plans than the Champion Hurdle in the autumn; the race was run at a better pace than the Supreme, leading to a slower finish, though it would be wrong to suggest the first 2, who came from off the pace, were in any way flattered.

BUVEUR D'AIR (FR) third to Altior in a top-notch Supreme in 2016, might have followed that stable companion to Grade 1 success at this meeting in a novice chase, but instead pitched up here after a mid-season change of plan, his performance well up to standard for the race, the Supreme remaining his only defeat over jumps, while his age poses no obstacle to his returning as a major contender in 2018; held up, tanked along, hit fifth, smooth headway before 2 out, led before last, won readily.
