is likely to be overshadowed as the season goes on but his transformation over 4 months that has got him a 4-timer is one of the success stories of the calendar year, improving the best part of 2 stone in the process, capped by this, hitting on an ordinary field for a Grade 2 but doing what he had to, and the way he made ground (from the back) suggests he'll be at home in stronger races at this level, cruising around the outside, then digging deep as called for to get on top on the run-in.

was still learning while winning in the autumn and put it into practice with an all-round improved showing here, finishing further ahead of West Approach than the time before, outpointed by one on a roll but going down fighting, rallying from the last after briefly looking third-best; if his jumping holds up (better here) he has the tools to do well in good handicaps.

turned the tables in a tactical sense with Wholestone, with more use made of him (pressed on from 4 out), seen to full effect, at least at this trip, his future still lying over further, and over fences in due course; he has raised his game a notch since returning, and on good ground, when his best last season came on soft/heavy.

inched closer from the rear so that he was within striking distance of the principals 2 out, as good as it got for him, one paced thereafter, but in the context of the stage of his career - especially relative to the first 3 - it was another promising performance to add to his Ayr win, thrown in the deep end for just his second race under Rules; he may benefit from a break following a fairly intensive start, but there's more improvement in him, bound to be drawn out by his top yard.

stuttering so far, the shine taken off 2 promising efforts by 2 underwhelming ones, but he's yet to get a clear run of racing, and he's entitled to have needed this after a 7-month absence, though never threatening at all, little response when asked after 3 out; the act of winning may do him a lot of good.

fast-tracked to a Grade 2, and clearly biting off more than he could chew, weakening 3 out after a prominent ride (led until fourth); his potential is intact for an appropriate level, especially as the horse he beat at Kempton (Lough Derg Leader) has won since.

unrealistic - but at the same time significant - that he was set this task for his hurdling debut, understandably not up to it, but going comfortably (held up) for a fair way, not knocked about as class and fitness told from 3 out; he's clearly well regarded, sent off favourite versus Mount Mews in a bumper at Market Rasen in April.

got the job done in a 4-runner novice at Fakenham, but either side he's been overmatched and overawed in Grade 2s, cheekpieces not doing anything for him here, a slow jump at the sixth the beginning of the tailed-off end for him.

All 9 ran. Hurdles: 10. Race Distance Adjustment: +31 yds

Winning Owner: Mr V. Byrne

A Grade 2 that had more of a feel of an end game than a graduation, probably the peak of the principals' progress, the winner's thriving status counting for plenty in a race where potential was either thin on the ground or unfulfilled; the pace was just modest until the injection by West Approach 4 out, which suddenly got the field on the stretch.

PEREGRINE RUN (IRE) is likely to be overshadowed as the season goes on but his transformation over 4 months that has got him a 4-timer is one of the success stories of the calendar year, improving the best part of 2 stone in the process, capped by this, hitting on an ordinary field for a Grade 2 but doing what he had to, and the way he made ground (from the back) suggests he'll be at home in stronger races at this level, cruising around the outside, then digging deep as called for to get on top on the run-in.
