improved, helped by a much better round of jumping, seen to maximum effect, both in terms of position on the track and in the race; raced wide, dictated, avoided mistakes, quickened 2 out, kept on well final 1f; has a willing attitude and may well have more to offer, though will do well to confirm placings with the runner-up another time.

gambled on (less exposed than rest), shaped very well after 8 months off, showing improvement on his useful novice form, likely to have won had things fallen slightly differently against a rival seen to maximum advantage; raced on unfavoured inside, waited with, tanked along, headway before last, challenged run-in, kept on; shaped as if potentially well ahead of his mark and one to follow over hurdles this season.

shaped well in first-time hood after 11 months off, still not fully exposed as hurdler and probably better on less testing ground; in touch, travelled well, shaken up before last, mistake there, faded run-in; likely to give a good account again, with the Ladbroke the obvious target.

has a good record in this race, including when winning it in 2012, and shaped as if retaining all ability after 19 months off, though his finishing effort was rather a characteristic one, not necessarily the result of lack of fitness; raced wide, held up, travelled strongly, headway before last, no extra run-in.

Non Runners: EAGLE ROCK (IRE), GOODWOOD MIRAGE (IRE). Hurdles: 8.

Winning Owner: Mrs Diana L. Whateley

Time: 4m 6.9s

A competitive renewal of the first big handicap hurdle of the autumn in Britain, spoilt by the lack of pace and the importance of track position, this feature coming late on the third day in a row on the Old course, the advantage lying with those that raced wide, the winner seen to maximum advantage on both counts, the runner-up much the better prospect so far as possible Champion Hurdle claims are concerned, others worth viewing positively, despite the unsatisfactory nature of the race.

GARDE LA VICTOIRE (FR) improved, helped by a much better round of jumping, seen to maximum effect, both in terms of position on the track and in the race; raced wide, dictated, avoided mistakes, quickened 2 out, kept on well final 1f; has a willing attitude and may well have more to offer, though will do well to confirm placings with the runner-up another time.

VANITEUX (FR) gambled on (less exposed than rest), shaped very well after 8 months off, showing improvement on his useful novice form, likely to have won had things fallen slightly differently against a rival seen to maximum advantage; raced on unfavoured inside, waited with, tanked along, headway before last, challenged run-in, kept on; shaped as if potentially well ahead of his mark and one to follow over hurdles this season.

CLONDAW WARRIOR (IRE) ran well back over hurdles, much improved on the Flat since last seen in this sphere, though seemingly having no excuses on the day; held up, headway when not fluent 2 out, ridden after, every chance last, not quicken run-in.

BLUE HERON (IRE) ran well, having been handed a stiff-looking mark, and that despite very little going his way as the race developed; raced on unfavoured inside, held up, outpaced 3 out, mistake next, kept on well run-in; will benefit from return to 2½m; remains open to improvement.

PINE CREEK shaped well in first-time hood after 11 months off, still not fully exposed as hurdler and probably better on less testing ground; in touch, travelled well, shaken up before last, mistake there, faded run-in; likely to give a good account again, with the Ladbroke the obvious target.

EXITAS (IRE) looked well-in under a penalty and, although he failed to confirm that, he shaped better than the bare result and will match his level last time in due course; raced on unfavoured inside, waited with, lost place before 3 out, stayed on straight, never on terms; well worth another chance, even though facing a hike in the weights.
