has often promised to land a good handicap and produced a career best returned to all-weather and to a track which particularly suits his style, showing fine early speed to overcome a wider-than-ideal draw; disputed lead, travelled well, went on 2f out, asserted last ½f, kept on well, well on top finish; he's potentially better than a handicapper granted similar circumstances.

ran creditably, especially with the 1f drop in trip being against him, faring best behind a pair of pacesetters who never came back; mid-field, driven over 2f out, kept on close home; will remain of interest, particularly back over 6f.

All 12 ran.

Winning Owner: Mr Charles Wentworth

Time: 58.16s Closing Sectional: (3.00f): 33.75s (103.4%)

The second of a couple of valuable handicaps on the card and it attracted the competitive field it deserved, though as often the case here it paid to be on the speed, the first 2 occupying those positions throughout.

DOCTOR SARDONICUS has often promised to land a good handicap and produced a career best returned to all-weather and to a track which particularly suits his style, showing fine early speed to overcome a wider-than-ideal draw; disputed lead, travelled well, went on 2f out, asserted last ½f, kept on well, well on top finish; he's potentially better than a handicapper granted similar circumstances.

EL ASTRONAUTE (IRE) making all-weather debut, ran at least as well in defeat as when winning the time before, albeit seen to good effect from a low stall and on a track which plays to his strengths; disputed lead, not settle fully, headed 2f out, rallied approaching final 1f, kept on.

MAZZINI ran creditably, especially with the 1f drop in trip being against him, faring best behind a pair of pacesetters who never came back; mid-field, driven over 2f out, kept on close home; will remain of interest, particularly back over 6f.

VERNE CASTLE shaped as if back in form, though was able to gain a good position after being well away from the widest stall; handy, driven 2f out, one paced.

ROYAL BIRTH wasted no time getting back on track despite not being seen to best effect, finishing closest of those who were patiently ridden; held up, not settle fully, short of room entering home turn, shaken up on inner early in straight, headway 1f out, one paced.

SIGN OF THE KODIAC (IRE) ran respectably, had no excuses; handy, ridden approaching 2f out, not quicken final 1f.

ENCORE D'OR back on all-weather, had won his last 2 starts here and shaped as if back in form, not seen to best effect in a race which didn't pan out at all for him under a very patient ride; waited with, travelled as well as any, shaken up out wide over 1f out, stayed on near line, never nearer.

EQUIMOU still doesn't look easy to place, but wasn't seen to best effect anyway; in rear, ridden early in straight, merely passed beaten horses, unsuited by the way the race developed.

BOOM THE GROOM (IRE) back on all-weather, was poorly drawn and too keen with no cover, so can have this run overlooked; in rear, took strong hold, shaken up early in straight, never landed a blow.

YALTA (IRE) strong in the betting making handicap/all-weather debut, is on a good mark based on his Molecomb win last year but failed to meet expectations, again unable to dominate; mid-field, ridden approaching 2f out, weakened final 1f.

GRAVITY FLOW (IRE) was well held down in trip and back in handicaps; held up, pushed along 2f out, never involved.

ZAC BROWN (IRE) back on all-weather, has gone off the boil; mid-division, weakened early in straight.
