took advantage of a much-reduced mark - even from 1 lb out of the weights - returned to fences as he took his form figures in this race to 121, clearly primed by an in-form yard back from 4 months off, though he needed every yard of a falsely-run race that barely placed enough emphasis on stamina for a dour stayer; close up early, lost ground gradually before halfway, outpaced 4 out, effort but still 6 lengths down in fifth crossing last, found plenty to lead dying strides; at least he can't go back up much (past exploits in this race from BHA mark of 120).

showed the clear benefit of his stable debut back over fences, all but pinching it under a well-judged ride; dictated, quickened 3 out, looked in control around 4 lengths up briefly run-in but collared dying strides, possibly idling but unlikely to have resisted the winner's surge even had he had more time to respond.

shaped as if as good as ever after 11 months off, weak in the market yet going close on only his third start - and first over fences - since joining a stable showing positive early signs this autumn; soon steadied, outpaced straight, rallied from 2 out, kept on well run-in and would have claimed second in another stride or 2.

was a useful stayer over hurdles and should reach a similar level over fences with time, leaving the impression he'll be sharper for this second attempt after 6 months off; in touch, blundered fifth, ridden from 4 out, rallied briefly last, no further impression.

without a tongue strap on the back of a breathing operation, showed plenty of ability remains second time back after another 6 weeks off, shaping better than the distance beaten suggests; in touch, raced freely, chased leader under circuit out, still second when lost momentum last, lost 3 places run-in.

The ditch in the back straight was omitted due to the state of the ground

A mostly exposed crowd took their chance in a race that threw up a finish of changing fortunes, a couple of strong stayers getting going late - one of them just in time - after the runner-up looked to have got away after controlling a steady pace.
