was well backed tackling an easier handicap than on last 2 starts and, all the better for an 8-week break and under a new rider, was back to best to come out on top, his second win at a track that suits; made running, jumped well, effort 3 out, kept on well, driven out; this was a good opening as it turned out, so a follow up may prove beyond him.

produced a career best, looking suited by 3m on his first try at the trip; close up, went with enthusiasm, mistake fourth, effort 3 out, stuck to task; proving most reliable this season and no reason why that should change.

ran no worse than respectably, a stiff 3m no problem, chasing down the first 2 late having started his effort from further back, and he's got form that says he's interesting from this sort of mark, despite having never won a handicap; mid-field, travelled fluently, ridden when hit 3 out, stayed on.

without the headgear this time, ran creditably after 12 weeks off, proof that he retains ability, and it's well worth remembering that he's a scopey sort who's still got time on his side, entitled to be sharper with this behind him as well; in touch, travelled well, shaken up 4 out, kept on.

back over hurdles, has work to do from this mark but ran respectably after 4 months off despite looking a bit rusty, so possible there might yet be some improvement in him, long distances perhaps worth a try; in touch, lost place eleventh, rallied pushed along 5 out, kept on.

wasn't in same form as last time, up in the weights in a better race, though a switch to patient tactics may not have been ideal, having impressed from the front at Sedgefield; held up, slow third, not fluent tenth, some headway 4 out, weakened before last.

ran badly after just 7 days off, cheekpieces (which in theory might have helped) tried to no avail, temperament a major problem nowadays; in rear, soon off bridle, driven early final circuit, well held 5 out, all the while looking none too keen.

has been given a chance by the handicapper but ran badly, some gutless jumping the main issue, though it's possible temperament is creeping in as well; pressed leader, jumped tentatively, pushed along early final circuit, dropped away 5 out.

No big improvers but plenty ran close to their useful best to give this handicap a solid look; the pace was sound but patient tactics are rarely an advantage over fences here, the winner making just about all.
