is from a small stable that are clearly forward for the time of year, as they also had the first winner on this card, and he produced a career best to cause a bit of a surprise on this return from 8 months off; mid-division, progress 3 out, went on 2 out, headed approaching last, hung badly right but still found plenty to lead again final 100 yds, suited by emphasis on stamina at this trip (won over 5f further last season).

was fitter for a recent run, that in his favour in a race in which all left standing after the first were returning from breaks, and showed improved form on handicap debut; patiently ridden, travelled smoothly, headway between 4 out and 3 out, led approaching last, headed final 100 yds, kept on, pulled clear of remainder; he remains unexposed after only 4 starts in this sphere.

is handicapped to the hilt but ran respectably over a trip shorter than ideal on return from 11 months off; led until approaching fourth, led again 3 out, ridden when headed next, hampered by loose horse soon after, stuck to task to get up for third again late on, finding this barely enough of a test; will benefit from return to 2½m.

shaped encouragingly after 6 months off, better than the distance beaten suggests; in rear, badly hampered first, good progress after 4 out, challenged next, faded run-in; progressed gradually in second half of last season and left the impression he can resume that, one to bear in mind.

With so many of these returning from 5 months off or more it's unlikely to prove the most solid form, fitness obviously crucial, several running as if in need of it; Captain Clayton completed a double for trainer Simon West, pulling clear with the only one involved after the first that had the benefit of a recent run - Most Honourable, the other that was race-fit, was badly hampered by Emral Silk's early fall and unseated.

CAPTAIN CLAYTON (IRE) is from a small stable that are clearly forward for the time of year, as they also had the first winner on this card, and he produced a career best to cause a bit of a surprise on this return from 8 months off; mid-division, progress 3 out, went on 2 out, headed approaching last, hung badly right but still found plenty to lead again final 100 yds, suited by emphasis on stamina at this trip (won over 5f further last season).

EMRAL SILK fell at the first on return from 10 months off, pulling hard in touch at the time.

MOST HONOURABLE was badly hampered by Emral Silk's fall and unseated at the first.
