made a mockery of his opening mark, demolishing a field of useful handicappers in the unmistakable style of a pattern-class performer; mid-field, travelled powerfully, good headway nearest centre over 2f out, quickened to lead over 1f out, stormed clear; a penalty for this is unlikely to get him into the Stewards' Cup, though a big rise in the weights won't stop him winning a top handicap if connections so wish (a return here for the Gold Cup itself could be an option), on his way to even better things.

was clearly better than the result under a 7-lb claimer, definitely quick enough for 6f in a race of this nature and on the radar for a handicap at the Western meeting, allowing that the way he's always ridden means he needs things to drop right; dropped out, denied a run under 2f out, switched final 1f, kept on well, finished with running left.

after 8 weeks off, shaped as if back in top form, in line with the stable as a whole, and is clearly better than he could show here; raced well off the pace, no room over 1f out, finished well; he hasn't often converted eye-catching efforts into wins, but there's no question he's both well treated and in the form to take advantage judged on this.

Mostly exposed northern types in this field but there were a few exceptions, including the winner, who was about as impressive as it gets in a sprint handicap; they raced as one group centre to stand side and overall the lower-drawn runners towards the centre fared best.

ALMERAQ made a mockery of his opening mark, demolishing a field of useful handicappers in the unmistakable style of a pattern-class performer; mid-field, travelled powerfully, good headway nearest centre over 2f out, quickened to lead over 1f out, stormed clear; a penalty for this is unlikely to get him into the Stewards' Cup, though a big rise in the weights won't stop him winning a top handicap if connections so wish (a return here for the Gold Cup itself could be an option), on his way to even better things.
