did all he had to in a race that didn't allow him to shine to the extent he had in the Gold Cup, still coming out on top in a slowly-run affair that placed less emphasis on stamina than perhaps ideal; never far away, pushed along briefly end of back straight, ridden 3 out, led approaching last, asserted final 50 yds, well on top finish; he'll remain a serious contender in the top staying chases again next season.

turned in easily his best effort of the season, running about as well as he ever has and maintaining his fine record at this meeting (form figures now 1122 amid overall record of inconsistency), his jumping untypically straight and fluent; close up, jumped well for a change, travelled well, led 3 out, headed approaching last, every chance run-in, held only final 50 yds; he's entered at Punchestown, though the Oaksey Chase might provide a less challenging alternative.

looked in fine shape and ran an excellent race out of novice company, just lacking a turn of foot late on in a test of speed, his effort auguring well for his prospects at the highest level next season; held up, pushed along 4 out, challenged 2 out, chased leaders last, one paced run-in.

had missed Cheltenham due to the poor form of his yard but was undone by a messy race as much as anything in failing to run to his best bidding to defend his crown; tracked pace, not fluent thirteenth, shaken up entering straight but unable to open up fully in bunched field, effort 2 out but unable to sustain it and soon not persevered with.

in a less demanding race, ran a good deal better than he had in the Gold Cup, this just his fifth start over fences, competitive until unable to go with the principals from 2 out; held up, not fluent tenth, effort straight, challenged 2 out, left behind after.

was tried in cheekpieces in an attempt to get him back to his best, but he ran a bit below even the level of his form this season, soon put in his place when the first 2 pressed on 2 out and reported to have made a respiritory noise; led until 3 out, ridden after, left behind next; he gave his all at Punchestown last season, though a revival there seems less likely than not.

faced a stiff task in this grade but still turned in a lacklustre effort, in trouble a long way out; off pace, not always fluent, labouring back straight, tailed off when pulled up straight.

A Cheltenham Gold Cup consolation race, with the market headed by the runner-up from the Festival and one who'd been forced to miss the blue riband, the former going one better but without having to match his performance of the previous month in a race that had been far more slowly run, the 6 remaining runners almost in line 2 out.

GERRI COLOMBE (FR) did all he had to in a race that didn't allow him to shine to the extent he had in the Gold Cup, still coming out on top in a slowly-run affair that placed less emphasis on stamina than perhaps ideal; never far away, pushed along briefly end of back straight, ridden 3 out, led approaching last, asserted final 50 yds, well on top finish; he'll remain a serious contender in the top staying chases again next season.
