seemed to have lost his edge through last season, not scaling the same heights as he had in 2015/16, but the handicapper had given him a chance, 8 lb lower than when reappearing in this race last year and, refreshed from 7 months off, he came back to his best to win another big prize, a good round of jumping and cracking attitude the key components, given a better ride than the runner-up too; never far away, jumped well, led 3 out, tackled from next, kept on gamely; the Ladbrokes Trophy (formerly the Hennessy) is likely to next up and he'll probably give a good account again for all that a rise in the weights will make a bit vulnerable.

had an excellent novice campaign and is still progressing, this his best effort yet after 6 months off, and not only that but he went like the best horse at the weights and should have won; held up, travelled strongly, headway after tenth, tracked pace 5 out, loomed up 2 out, kept to inside and was short of room approaching last, crucially not fluent, switched on the run-in and staying on again final in the final 50 yds; the way that he travels and jumps will continue to stand him in good stead and there's a big handicap prize in him sooner rather than later, very much of interest for the BetVictor Gold Cup at Cheltenham next month.

returned from 6 months off with a respectable effort and gave the impression that he'll sharpen up for it; chased leader, outpaced between 4 out and 3 out, rallied 2 out, one paced; everything did seem a bit rushed with his 2016/17 campaign when he didn't return until February and maybe with a smoother run at things he'll have a more productive season (well handicapped on very best form).

should strip fitter for the run after 6 months off, shaping better than the distance beaten suggests, in contention until lack of fitness seemed to tell; chased leaders, travelled better than most, every chance still 3 out, tied up.

possibly needed the run after 7 months off and was spared a hard race; mid-division, hit ninth, struggling 4 out, made little impression but wasn't knocked about; he's a bit quirky but has some solid form and has proven he can be competitive from this sort of mark.

developed into a top-class chaser last season, winning the Bowl here in April, and this just had the feel of a starting point for the new season returning from 7 months off, back down markedly in trip, outpaced 5 out and never on terms; this should put him spot on for the Betfair Chase.

was strong in the betting after 6 months off, unbeaten on his previous completed starts over fences, but proved to be a disappointment; mid-division, labouring 5 out, weakened 4 out, behind when pulled up before last; he's clearly much better than this and the stable's horses returning have generally been needing a run this autumn.

There may not be a handicap chase all season that boasts as much quality as there was in this year's Old Roan line up, the weights headed by Grade 1 winners God's Own and Tea For Two, with a host of other high-class chasers helping to make up the 12-strong field; although the quality was very high, however, it has to be said that with all bar 2 of them making their seasonal reappearance it's safe to assume that there were varying degrees of readiness amongst them, pulling down both the competitiveness and solidity of the bare result to some extent, but there's still no doubt that a positive view can be taken of the principals as the well-treated winner and progressive runner-up pulled clear.

SMAD PLACE (FR) seemed to have lost his edge through last season, not scaling the same heights as he had in 2015/16, but the handicapper had given him a chance, 8 lb lower than when reappearing in this race last year and, refreshed from 7 months off, he came back to his best to win another big prize, a good round of jumping and cracking attitude the key components, given a better ride than the runner-up too; never far away, jumped well, led 3 out, tackled from next, kept on gamely; the Ladbrokes Trophy (formerly the Hennessy) is likely to next up and he'll probably give a good account again for all that a rise in the weights will make a bit vulnerable.
