My best bet of the day is THEMAXWECAN in the 14:25 at Goodwood. This is a horse that shaped well in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot, ridden a lot more conservatively than he usually and meeting trouble on the way through, all in all doing well to finish fourth. You can write off his run at Newbury last time when he was again ridden from the rear in a race unsuited to those tactics.
There doesn’t appear to be a great deal of pace on and he is expected to be ridden a lot more positively this time from stall one and with the proactive Richard Kingscote aboard, and he looks set for a big run, having the boon of already being a winner at this track, too.
Newmarket’s 15:15 doesn’t look a strong fillies listed event and the most interesting one in there is KATARA. Her form to date stacks up well, splitting Majestic Noor and Lady G, both of whom have improved quite a bit since, at Yarmouth before winning in good style at Kempton last time, beating a fairly useful and consistent sort in La Dragontea by five lengths.
She’s quite an imposing sort physically, sure to be suited by a mile and a half, and has the scope for a good bit more improvement.
There are a lot of interesting horses in the Stewards’ Cup this year but I’ve still been tempted into taking a flyer on one at a price in SILENT ECHO. He’s been at the top of his game for a while now, winning at Newmarket in June before finishing fifth in the Wokingham, doing pretty well to be second home in his group. He wasn’t seen to best effect at Newbury last time and there’s a fair chance he can outrun his sizeable odds for a yard that has been in quite good nick recently.
He is drawn around pace, having the likes of Aljady, Watan and Hey Jonesy in stalls not far away, and he has unfinished business in this race having been denied a clear run when finishing fifth, off a 3 lb higher mark, in the 2018 renewal.
