St Leger: Runner-By-Runner Guide

Improved for the step up to 1¾m when getting the better of Barbados by half a length in Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot in June. Acquitted himself well when fourth in Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket next time, though did have the run of things that day, and limitations were rather exposed in Goodwood Cup since. Others preferred.

Form has taken off since stepped up to 2m last twice, routing the opposition in a handicap at the Curragh in July before acquitting himself really well up against a couple of high-class older horses when one and a quarter lengths third of four to Stradivarius and Dee Ex Bee in Lonsdale Cup at York three weeks ago. That form puts him right in the mix here and is guaranteed to stay, so can't be discounted.

Highly-progressive Frankel colt (already very smart having made his debut only in May) who made a mockery of an opening handicap mark of 90 when stepped up to 1½m for the first time at Newbury in July. Showed another jolt of improvement when extending his unbeaten record to four when easily accounting for his four rivals in Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last month, despite not looking the finished article still. This extra distance unlikely to pose a problem for him and looks a worthy favourite.

Placed in both Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot and Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket before running out a game winner of Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in August. Clearly below par when last of five behind Logician in Great Voltigeur Stakes at York next time and, for all he's the type to bounce back quickly given his record, he looks no more than a fringe player here on his best form.

Belied market weakness to get off the mark at first attempt in a big-field maiden at Tipperary in April. Wiped the floor with his rivals (including Norway and Dashing Willoughby) when an eight-length winner of the Chester Vase less than two weeks later. Made favourite for the Derby and supplemented by connections after that and ran a fine race to finish fifth at Epsom, losing out only to more experienced rivals in a bunched finish. Not seen to best effect back from a break when fourth in Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh last month, not suited by the test of speed over an inadeqaute trip, and should leave that well behind here. Big run expected over a distance he promises to stay.

Typically tough and progressive three-year-old from this yard, winning five of his six starts this season, including valuable handicaps at Haydock and Glorious Goodwood in July. Made a successful debut into pattern company when making most in March Stakes at latter track three weeks ago, again showing a willing attitude. Although his form is someway removed from what is likely to be required here, he's open to further improvement and his stamina is assured. Respected.

Rather unlucky not to win Classic Trial at Sandown in April before shaping as if amiss when behind Sir Dragonet in Chester Vase soon after. Back on track to win two of his next three starts after, though, taking his form to another level when beating his elders in Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury last time, staying on strongly to beat Morando by three quarters of a length. Stamina looked his forte on that occasion, and is another with place claims here, especially if the ground eases.

Winner of a 13f listed event at Navan in May, but is exposed as useful and acted as a pacemaker for his stablemate Japan in Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp last time. Similar scenario awaits if taking up his engagement.

Analyst's Verdict

This doesn't look the deepest renewal and the highly-progressive LOGICIAN is taken to extend his unbeaten record to 5. John Gosden’s colt looks to have the raw ability to go all the way to the top judged on his win in the Great Voltigeur at York, and 13 winners of that Group 2 event have followed up in this. Sir Dragonet is the obvious threat based on his close fifth in the Derby.
