Sea Of Faith gets back on winning trail at Salisbury

William Haggas hopes it is onwards and upwards for Sea Of Faith after she turned what had been a frustrating campaign around with a decisive success in the British EBF Fillies' Handicap at Salisbury.

Suffering an odds-on defeat on her handicap debut at Newbury last time out, the daughter of Sea The Stars left that effort behind when powering clear by three lengths in the mile-and-a-half contest to complete a double on the card for James Doyle.

Haggas was not at the track, but said of the 3-1 winner: "That was very pleasing. James felt he had the wrong instructions last time, but we made amends today.

"She is a very nice filly and we are now finding the key to her. She is finally showing her talent, it has just taken about 18 months to get there.

"I need to talk to James, but it looked to me like she would get further. There was three lengths between her and the runner-up and another six lengths back to the third in a competitive race, so it was a good effort."

With winning connections having lost dual Group One winner Sea Of Class to colic, the Newmarket handler feels Sea Of Faith can fill part of that void.

He added: "Sadly she has not got the turn of foot of Sea Of Class, but she is a nice staying filly. She will go up to stakes class now.

"It will be either a Listed or Group Three, but we have got one or two similar to her that we need to organise. At least we have got her season back on track."

Aluqair got his head in front at the sixth time of asking when making his race fitness count to get the ball rolling for Doyle when obliging by three-quarters of a length in the M J Church Novice Stakes.

Doyle said of the Simon Crisford-trained 7-4 shot: "There is a very strong headwind, but he had the experience. Out there from my draw, there was not much I could do. I was left alone to dictate my own fractions. He went through the gears nicely."

Raincall stood head and shoulders above her rivals in both the paddock and on the track, making it two wins from as many appearances at the Wiltshire circuit when holding Maid From the Mist in the First Carlton Fillies' Handicap.

Henry Candy said of the 10-11 winner: "She is an absolute giant and stands just over 17 hands tall. We had a job getting her used to the stalls, but she is very good now.

"She is bred to be big and quick. I imagine she will be off to stud at the end of the year."

Alan Bailey has had little to celebrate this summer but Clem A (10-1) changed that after giving the Newmarket handler his first winner since May when initiating a double for Oisin Murphy in division one of the Booker Wholesale Handicap.

Assistant trainer Joe Parr said: "It eases the pressure a little bit as we have been on the cold list for a while.

"I bought this horse for these lads. The first time he ran well at Windsor but needed it, then he was a bit keen at Nottingham and at Yarmouth I don't know what happened.

"He has come here today off 62 and I think he is better than that. That will have done his confidence the world of good."

Murphy was also on target aboard the John Gosden-trained Kick On (9-2) in the feature Tattersalls Sovereign Stakes.
