Logan lifts listed honours at Salisbury

Fanny Logan set herself up for a return to Pattern-race company after running riot over her rivals in the British Stallion Studs EBF Upavon Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury.

The John Gosden-trained three-year-old followed up her Listed-race success at York to score again at the same level, recording a decisive victory in the mile-and-a-quarter prize.

Travelling well throughout, the 1-2 favourite, who ran in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, quickly put the race to bed when sent on by Robert Havlin, crossing the line seven lengths clear of Sand Share to give Gosden his third victory in the race.

Gosden's son and assistant, Thady, said: "She won it very well, she came here without a penalty and went well on the ground. She is a Sea The Stars out of a Manduro mare, so we thought she would go on it.

"We were very happy with that. The hood has made a difference. She was a bit keen early, but it was heavy round the bend and when she hit that it that settled her down.

"We will probably look at keeping her over that trip for now. She is clearly improving throughout the year. We will probably go for a Group Three next time."

Impressor looked a colt of considerable potential in winning the British EBF Molson Coors Novice Stakes.

Having made a promising debut at Goodwood, the Marcus Tregoning-trained son of Footstepsinthesand built on that effort as he cruised to victory in division two of the six-furlong affair.

Racing in front rank throughout, the 13-8 shot, who holds Group Two entries in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury, quickly put daylight between himself and the rest when called on for his effort.

Tregoning said: "He is a smart horse. It didn't quite go to plan at Goodwood. We've had a dry summer and it has been difficult getting the two-year-olds going well enough.

"I think we will be stepping him up in grade. I think he is more like a Mill Reef horse. He settles well and I think he has got enough speed for Newbury. When a two-year-old wins like that they are usually pretty smart. It shows the benefit of having a run.

"We had Boom And Bust who won what was the totesport Mile at Goodwood and over £250,0000, but I've struggled to find another Footstepsinthesand until I found this one.

"When you find a good one they are usually pretty good."

Ascension (13-8) also looked a useful individual in the opening division.

Mario Gussago, assistant to winning trainer Roger Varian, said: "He was scratched last week because of the ground as we know he has a bit of a knee action and we know he wants a bit of cut in the ground.

"It looks like we are going to have a nice horse and Jack (Mitchell) said he was confident, as he knew he had a lot of horse underneath him - he just had to wait for the gap.

"Jack said at the moment to keep him at six. If he stays sound we know he loves cut in the ground, so he could have a nice back end to the season."

Adam Kirby saw his decision to go it alone up the far side rail pay off with Maid Of Spirit (7-2) defeating the hat-trick-seeking Texting by two and a quarter lengths in the S H Jones Wines Handicap.

Trainer Clive Cox said: "That might just do her confidence a bit of good. She won her maiden very well and we are very pleased to get that one in the net."

Henry Candy's Alfred Boucher (4-1) overcame ground worries in the Brunton Publications Pembroke Handicap.

Candy said: "I didn't think he would go on the ground at all, as he is a lovely, long-striding, light mover, but David (Probert) said he absolutely loved it.

"He got an easy lead and everything fell into place."

There was no wiping the smile off the face of Charlotte Bennett, as she celebrated the first winner of her career through Another Boy (12-1) in division one of the Shadwell Racing Excellence Apprentice Handicap.

The 20-year-old, who is attached to the yard of winning trainer Ralph Beckett, said: "It's amazing really and I can't stop smiling. He jumped out well and travelled well the whole way through and just kept going.

"Hopefully now I've got one winner a few more will come."
