July Cup: Runner-By-Runner Guide

ArticleImage

Get the Timeform runner-by-runner guide for the 2019 July Cup at Newmarket, plus get our expert analyst's best bet.

1 - BRANDO

Won Abernant Stakes at Newmarket (for second successive season) in 2018, but could only manage third in latest renewal of that race on return in May. Resumed winning ways in calmer waters in minor event at Hamilton last time in straightforward style, and looks ready for this step back up in grade. Finished placed in last two renewals of this race so not to be underestimated.

2 - CAPE BYRON

Much improved model this season, making winning return in Victoria Cup at Ascot and progressed again to follow up in 26-runner Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot (by one and a half lengths from Tis Marvellous, produced to lead over a furlong out having travelled powerfully and quickening clear) last time. Completely unexposed as a sprinter and well worth his place at this level.

3 - DREAM OF DREAMS

High-class performer who won minor event at Chelmsford in April and listed race at Windsor (by length from Glorious Journey) in May. Better than ever when head second to Blue Point in Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, keeping on well in final furlong and just failing. The one to beat on that form, but wouldn't want to get too far back on this more speed-orientated track.

4 - GLORIOUS JOURNEY

Well-bred sort who underlined versatility regards trip when finishing neck second to Limato in Criterion Stakes over 7f here last time. Was getting 5 lb from that rival on that occasion, though, and hard to see him turning the tables back off level weights here.

5 - LIM'S CRUISER

Smart performer in Singapore and not disgraced when mid-field behind Blue Point in Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot last time. Likely to come up short again here, though.

6 - LIMATO

Very smart performer who stepped up markedly on reappearance to win Criterion Stakes (7f, by neck from Glorious Journey, all out when tackled final furlong) last time. Goes particularly well at this track (won this race in 2016 and runner-up in 2017) and arrives in top form, so hard to crab his chances for all he seemingly isn't the force of old.

7 - MAJOR JUMBO

Won handicaps here on Rowley Course and York (Coral Sprint Trophy) in 2018. Placed in listed/pattern races this year, finishing two and a quarter lengths second to Invincible Army in Duke of York Stakes at latter course and three lengths third to Inns of Court in Prix du Gros-Chene at Chantilly on last two outings. Likeable front-runner who holds sound place claims once more.

8 - ADVERTISE

Very smart performer who won maiden at Newbury, July Stakes over C&D and Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh (by half a length from So Perfect) in 2018. Left disappointing reappearance in 2000 Guineas well behind when winning Commonwealth Cup in first-time blinkers (by one and a half lengths from Forever In Dreams, making good headway to lead a furlong out and keeping on well) last time. Leading sprinter of his generation and a danger to all now tackling his elders.

9 - TEN SOVEREIGNS

Successful in all three starts in 2018, notably Middle Park Stakes on Rowley Course. Ran well for long way before finding stamina stretched in 2000 Guineas on return, but failed to build on that when two and a quarter lengths fourth to Advertise in Commonwealth Cup last time, off bridle before most and unable to quicken over a furlong out. Sent off a strong favourite on that occasion, so clearly held in high regard, but does have a bit to prove now.

10 - FAIRYLAND

Successful in four of five starts in 2018, including Lowther Stakes at York and Cheveley Park Stakes on Rowley Course. Not disgraced but seemingly failed to stay 1m first two starts this season, and proved at least as good as ever when three lengths fifth to Blue Point in King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, on first try at 5f. Chances are she can do better still back at 6f, so not ruled out.

11 - PRETTY POLLYANNA

Impressive winner of Duchess of Cambridge Stakes over C&D in 2018. Second in Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh on return, but below that form when six and three quarter lengths seventh to Watch Me in Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, possibly finding stamina stretched due to different underfoot conditions. Return to sprinting looks a good move, and return to last season's peak form should see her involved.

12 - SO PERFECT

Strong filly who won Lacken Stakes at Naas in May, but below form when six and a quarter lengths ninth to Space Traveller in Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last time. Could be that 6f is her optimum trip, but still has a bit to find to trouble the principals here.

Analyst's Verdict

Three-year-olds have won 3 of the last 4 renewals and ADVERTISE holds strong claims of further enhancing that record. He proved better than ever in blinkers at Royal Ascot 3 weeks ago, putting his below-par return in the 2000 Guineas well behind him, and has already proved his liking for this track when winning the July Stakes over C&D 12 months ago. Dream of Dreams and Brando are feared most.
