1 - WHO DARES WINS
Finally landed a big staying handicap when narrow winner of Northumberland Plate at Newcastle in June. Good fourth in 20f Prix du Cadran at Longchamp last weekend so highly respected here.
2 - CYPRESS CREEK
Group 3 winner over 2m at Naas as a three-year-old. Has struggled this season in face of some stiff tasks, and vulnerable to improvers switched to a handicap.
3 - SNEAKY GETAWAY
Useful bumper winner and quickly reached a similar level on the Flat, winning Leopardstown maiden and 2m Tramore handicap this summer. Out of his depth in Doncaster Cup last time and plenty on here.
4 - STRATUM
One of three for powerful Wille Mullins' yard. Well held in this last year but generally running well over both codes this term (smart hurdler) so no surprise if he played a big part this time around.
5 - DUBAWI FIFTY
Excellent 2nd in Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and unsuited by the emphasis on speed over 2m at York in August. Fourth in this contest in 2017 so not ruled out lightly here in a first-time visor.
6 - EDDYSTONE ROCK
Best efforts for a while when winning back-to-back handicaps at Ascot and York in August. Suited by the emphasis on speed at latter track, however, and will find this an altogether different test.
7 - TIME TO STUDY
Third in Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot and finally built on that to win last two starts, notably the Old Borough Cup at Haydock last month. Remains on handy mark on peak form, so shortlisted.
Excellent 2nd in Ascot Stakes then won 12f Galway maiden before runner-up to a subsequent winner in valuable 13f handicap at Leopardstown. Still unexposed at this trip and one to beat for top yard.
9 - CARNWENNAN
3-time winner this term, latest at Newcastle in June, and good fifth in 2m York handicap in August given needed stronger gallop. Will be well suited by this stamina test and in mix if rain holds off.
10 - NOT SO SLEEPY
Without a win on Flat this season but arrives in good form, seventh of 16 to Time To Study in 14f handicap at Haydock 35 days ago. Up in trip and respected.
11 - RAINBOW DREAMER
Better than ever when winning at Southwell (extended 2m) in February but below-par eighth of 16 to Time To Study in 14f handicap at Haydock 7 months later. He needs to step forward here.
12 - COEUR DE LION
Thorough stayer who has held his form well since his wide-margin win at Chester in May, beaten only by better handicapped pair in valuable handicap at Newbury when last seen in July. Place prospect.
13 - HERMOSO MUNDO
Useful in South Africa but it's now 12 runs since his last win in 2017. Creditable fifth in 14f Yarmouth handicap 23 days ago but others are lot more persuasive here.
14 - BILLY RAY
Excellent second in 2m Newbury handicap in July but well beaten only run since on good to firm in 2m Ascot handicap. Has had wind operation and now in a visor so not ruled out if it comes up soft.
15 - THEMAXWECAN
Steadily progressive 3-y-o who took his form to another level when winning 2m handicap at Goodwood in September. Now penalised 4 lb but this stamina test will suit so he's firmly in the mix.
16 - GARBANZO
Only twice raced this term, scoring at Kempton (12f) in August before good 5th to Time To Study in 14f handicap at Haydock. Not dismissed on first try over this trip and more rain the better for him.
17 - SOVEREIGN DUKE
Low-mileage colt but has already shown fairly useful form and posted a good second of 7 in 14f handicap at Newmarket 77 days ago. Yet to race beyond 14f but needs more to trouble the principals here.
18 - GREAT WHITE SHARK
Ready winner of 2m Galway handicap when last seen on the Flat in July and remains unexposed in this sphere. Generally progressive over hurdles (3m winner) so commands respect for leading yard. Player.
19 - COEUR BLIMEY
Not seen since well held in Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot but beat Coeur de Lion and Who Dares Wins over this trip on soft ground in Newbury handicap in spring. Contender if the rains come.
20 - RANCH HAND
Low mileage 3-y-o and improved to win on handicap bow over 14f at Haydock last month, suited by step up in trip and seeming to relish soft ground. Big player under 4 lb penalty if stamina test suits.
21 - MR EVEREST
Ended 2018 with good 3rd in Irish Cesarewitch at Navan then won 14f handicap at Naas. Midfield at Galway only Flat run since but in winning form over hurdles and much improved showing on cards here.
22 - TIMOSHENKO
Off track 12 months prior to extending winning sequence to six in 20f Goodwood handicap in July. This more galloping track will play to his strengths (stamina very much his forte) so firmly in mix.
23 - SEINSATIONAL
Talented but unreliable type, latest win at Sandown in June. Creditable fourth in 17.5f handicap at Ayr 22 days ago but others still make more appeal.
24 - SUMMER MOON
Career best when winning 14f handicap at Yarmouth 23 days ago but had run of race there and has plenty more on his plate here under a 4 lb penalty. Others are preferred.
25 - ROCHESTER HOUSE
3 wins from 11 runs this year, latest at Catterick in August, but beat only one in 14f handicap at York last time. Now upped in trip and has something to find on form.
26 - GREAT TANGO
Fair Irish 2m winning handicapper and arrives on the back of improved Galway hurdle win in August. Still not fully exposed in this sphere so he shouldn't be dismissed lightly.
27 - PARTY PLAYBOY
Fairly useful 20f winner over hurdles and creditable second back on Flat in 14f maiden at Gowran (soft) 38 days ago. Back up in trip but needs to find more.
28 - NUITS ST GEORGES
Winner at Nottingham and Goodwood in summer and good second in 2m handicap at Ffos Las 27 days ago, racing closer to pace than ideal. This is tougher though so more is needed.
29 - DARKSIDEOFTARNSIDE
Won over 14f at Ffos Las and visored when excellent second in 2m handicap at Ascot (heavy) last week. Can race off the same mark here and the more rain the better for this dour stayer. In the mix.
30 - GRACEFUL LADY
Course winner, latest win here over 2m in August. Raced too freely when only seventh of 8 to Land of Oz in handicap over C&D 21 days ago so she needs a lot more to enter calculations here.
31 - LAND OF OZ
Typical improver in handicaps for this yard, winning 6 of his last 7 and latest success in Cesarewitch Trial over C&D three weeks ago. Carries double penalty and a player with more to come.
BUILDMEUPBUTTERCUP looks primed to give Willie Mullins back-to-back wins in this prestigious staying handicap after 2 excellent runs over shorter distances since his fine Ascot Stakes second. Fellow Irish raider Mr Everest is also set to deliver a much improved showing here and rates the chief threat while Timoshenko can fare best of the home contingent ahead of stablemate Land of Oz.
