was clearly all the better for his recent stable debut and caused a surprise in a first-time tongue strap, rolling back the years with a near-faultless display; jumped well, led third, made rest, tackled approaching 3 out, stayed on well (going away again at the line); it remains to be seen how long he holds things together, though he'll remain with handicapping scope, and even if this does prove a seasonal highlight it's already a fine advert for one of the best small stables anywhere, never mind just in Scotland.

showed nothing to encourage on his first outing since leaving W. P. Mullins after 9 months off; raced off the pace, lost touch from 4 out, pulled up straight, cutting a sorry figure bearing in mind his lofty prime.

turned in best effort of the season despite constantly giving ground away at the fences and, while he's clearly not the force he once was, this performance does at least suggest he's still capable of holding his own at this sort of level under the right circumstances; raced wide, waited with, jumped markedly left, not fluent ninth, took closer order from 4 out, ridden from 3 out, one paced.

back up in trip, didn't see his race out under an overly-aggressive ride; disputed lead, went on early final circuit, untidy eleventh, headed before next, weakened from 4 out, pulled up 2 out, did too much too soon.

after just 4 days off, made the most of a good opportunity to claim his first win since the 2017 Cheltenham Festival; waited with, typically jumped left, tanked along, bumped by loose horse seventh, good progress from halfway, jumped on last, cruised clear; remains to be seen if able to back this up returned to stronger company (unplaced last 7 starts in graded events).

back over hurdles, wasn't up to the task for the second year running, ridden in contrasting fashion to 12 months ago; he looked a hard ride dropped out, racing too freely and having to be taken back off heels a couple of times, staying on the far side on his own into the straight and never on terms.

back over fences, was well backed but added to an ever growing list of disappointing efforts after 10 months off; mid-field, not settle fully, went prominent after ninth, not fluent 4 out, upsides briefly home turn, switched before 2 out, jumped left there (as he has in the past), held when jumped left again last; he's plenty to prove now.

didn't help his cause with some erratic jumping and couldn't match his effort last time; held up, not at all fluent, jumped left numerous times, never a threat.

back up markedly in trip, shaped a little better than the distance beaten suggests, once again giving the impression that 3m is beyond him, but it is very much a case of back to the drawing board with him; dropped out, some headway 3 out (upsides Bapaume turning for home), effort flattened out.
13 Mar 18 Chl C1 Grade 1 pu/11 Hurdle G1 16.4f Soft D. J. Mullins 14/115 28.5 -/21 5 97.8
had won at each of the last 2 Festivals, but he hasn't looked himself this season and, back over hurdles for the first time since 2016, he never looked likely to get involved, pulled up before the last.

has a lofty reputation (and his 2016/17 novice form more than backs that up) but he couldn't have made a worse start to the current campaign, turning in a lifeless display returned to much shorter here, the trip almost certainly just a side issue; mid-division, travelled nowhere near so well as usual, clouted fifth, lost place after next, well beaten straight (possibly amiss); plenty to prove at present.

shaped much better than the distance beaten suggests after 9 months off, still a close third turning for home after going with typical exuberance at the head of affairs, his jumping having held up well for the most part, but ultimately left the impression that he will prove best at short of 3m; chased leaders, tanked along, pulled way to front fifth, led until blundered 5 out, remained prominent, faded early in straight, finished tired, not knocked about; well worth another chance.

lost his unbeaten record over fences, but shaped much the best on the day, his much-publicised quirks just getting the better of him on this occasion, doing plenty wrong from an early stage, that he might still have won on the bridle had he not lost all momentum at the last a testament to his innate ability; waited with, jumped markedly left, pulled way to front after fourth, headed briefly before 3 out, looked in control 2 out, still on bridle when shaped to run out approaching last, headed run-in, rallied well close home, just failed; a mercurial talent, he remains with the potential to reach the very top in 2017/18, be it over fences or back over hurdles, his connections suggesting after the race the latter option is under serious consideration.

was primed to produce his best performance of the season at this meeting in 2016, when an impressive winner of the Neptune, and took his chase form to a new level as he maintained his unbeaten start over fences back at Grade 1 level, going about it in a familiar manner, saving something back, no doubt that there's more in the tank as and when required; in rear, travelled strongly and jumped fine (helped by keeping to the inside rail given tendency he's shown to jump left), headway when hampered briefly 4 out, in touch next, led soon after 2 out, pecked at the last, idled and driven out; he has the potential to go to the very top in this sphere and will be hard to beat if heading for the Manifesto at Aintree.

maintained his unbeaten start over fences in facile fashion, yet even this bare form has him in the upper range of this season's novices, with signals pointing towards the JLT rather than the Arkle as a Cheltenham aim, returned to further for this next - and possibly final (given his effectiveness fresh) - step on the road for a yard who has Min for the latter race; tracked pace, jumped left (but nothing like so badly as at right-handed Fairyhouse), jumped on fourth, made rest, looked in control from some way out, hard held and value for considerably more than the final margin; his tendency to go left isn't ideal, even on another left-handed track like Cheltenham, but few will line up boasting his level of ability.

a high-class novice hurdler last season, duly made a successful debut over fences after 8 months off, looking a natural as he effortlessly drew clear of the runner-up in the straight, a tendency to go left at some of his fences the only blemish on an otherwise faultless display; prominent, tanked along, went on third, jumped left at times, asserted on bridle from 2 out, impressive; a hugely exciting and often exuberant individual, he may well prove best granted some time between his races, nevertheless he has the potential to reach the very top over fences and is one to look forward to for the remainder of the season.

proved at Cheltenham and Aintree that he's one of the most talanted novice hurdlers around and clearly wasn't 100% this day, safe to assume hard races at those other recent festivals had left a mark, whilst he might be better racing the other way round too; held up, not fluent and jumped left (markedly at times), some headway after 4 out, mistake 2 out, labouring soon after, faded; this defeat - the first of his career - doesn't change the fact that he's a big talent and an exciting prospect, whether sent chasing next season or sticking to hurdles.

didn't need to be at his best to maintain his unbeaten record, a disconcerting lack of application a bit of a concern, hopefully something which will disappear as he matures, for he remains a top-class prospect judged overall; held up, started to pull hard after second, jumped none too fluently, in front by seventh, untidy 2 out, jumped left last, then hung left, found extra when shaken up final 1f, in command at finish.
16 Mar 16 Chl C Grade 1 1/11 1.75 Hurdle G1 21.1f Good R. Walsh 3/14 4.81 8.2/- 4Ki 102.6 156 150+ 168+
had looked a fine prospect on each previous start under Rules and maintained his unbeaten record in a deeper Grade 1 than the Tolworth he'd won with something to spare 11 weeks ago, again value for extra, not the sort to do a lot in front, and it was so impressive how he carted himself there soon after the home turn; raced along inside, held up, tanked along, headway when untidy 3 out, led on bridle between last 2, idled run-in (edged right), ridden out; there are so many options for him going forward, no doubt that he has the speed to drop back to 2m, be it for a Champion Hurdle or novice-chase campaign, either way a top-class performer in the making, and nearer to hand there's surely another Grade 1 novice to be won with him.

down markedly in trip, built on promise of hurdling debut; waited with, jumped slightly left, travelled well, headway straight, led on bridle soon after 2 out, ridden run-in, kept on; remains open to significant improvement and well up to winning more races.

smart in bumpers (one of the best around in that sphere last season), again looked a cracking prospect as he made a winning debut over hurdles; prominent, tanked along, chased leader after fifth, led before last and forged clear; heads the ante-post betting for both the Neptune and the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham, and there are certainly better races than this that he'll be winning in this sphere.

down in trip, was strong in the betting and showed much improved form to follow up last month's Gowran success in most taking fashion, producing a level of performance that would have seen him go close in any of the championship events at the major spring festivals, the turn of foot he showed to put the race to bed on the home turn all the more impressive given the stoutness of his pedigree; mid-field, tanked along, produced to lead approaching home turn, pressed on soon after, looked in control early in straight, reduced advantage inside final 1f, kept going well and never looked like being caught; he's bred to do the job over jumps and looks as good a prospect as there is for novice hurdles in 2015/16.
