wasn't in the same form as last time, not ideally placed the way things panned out but unlikely to got close to the winner no matter which way he was ridden; dropped out, still plenty to do 2 out, headway under pressure entering straight, kept on, never a threat; runner-up in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham last year, a place is probably the best he can again hope for back there next month.

made it a hat-trick in this race after 5 months off (last seen on the Flat), underestimated in the betting as he'd been in the last 2 renewals, setting the standard coming in and needing only to run close to his best to burst a couple of bubbles; held up, travelled strongly, not fluent 3 out, good progress after 2 out, loomed up approaching last, quickened to lead run-in, driven clear; he seemed to have few excuses when beaten by Epatante in last season's Champion Hurdle, though that one has left the door ajar slightly with a disappointing effort in last week's Christmas Hurdle.

in first-time tongue strap (on Flat), is better over jumps than on the level but wasn't seen to anything like best effect; dropped out, tanked along, steady headway out wide from halfway, every chance entering straight, no extra, did too much too soon; won't be one to dismiss lightly if turned out again in a 1½m handicap here on Saturday.

back in a tongue strap, proved better than ever to land this race for the second year in a row, his turn of foot again proving decisive; held up, smooth headway from 3 out, produced to lead last, quickened clear; now a 3-time Grade 1 winner over hurdles, he has to be considered a live Champion Hurdle contender in what is an open year.

added another Grade 1 success following on from the Morgiana, this a stronger event in theory but not practice, showing much the best turn of foot in a race in which the main players were a long way below their peak, and he probably didn't need to improve his form to run out a comfortable winner; waited with, not fluent second, crept closer after 2 out, quickened to lead approaching last and scooted clear on the run-in, well on top at the finish; it's hard to say quite where this leaves him with regards the Champion Hurdle, still with a good bit to find in terms of winning the race in all likelihood.

resumed winning ways, in doing so breaking his duck at Grade 1 level, belatedly so having had last season's Future Champions Novices' Hurdle at his mercy when falling at the last, suited by the way this race developed; patiently ridden, jumped fluently, travelled well, took closer order before 3 out, went second next, quickened to lead early in straight, driven clear; given he's just a 5-y-o, there is a chance that there is further improvement to come, though he'll need to find another 7 lb or so to become a genuine Champion Hurdle contender, generally a 33/1 shot for that race.
