Ratings Update: Haydock reaction

ArticleImage

Tony McFadden provides the Timeform ratings reaction following last week's racing.

With Royal Ascot around the corner it was unsurprisingly a low-key week of racing, though there were some smart performances posted at Haydock on Saturday, including from Believing (117 from 113) in the opening Achilles Stakes.

Nunthorpe winner Live In The Dream (remains 122) proved disappointing, possibly finding the run coming too soon after his promising reappearance in the Temple Stakes, and that opened the door for Believing to capitalise. She had shown smart form when a close-up third in the Group 1 Sprint Cup over six furlongs at Haydock last season but arguably produced an even better performance on Saturday on just her second start at five furlongs, comfortably drawing two-and-three-quarter lengths clear of the runner-up. With her sex allowance factored in she will be towards the head of Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings in the King Charles III Stakes so would not be one to rule out at a big price in what looks like a below-par edition.

Later on the card, Tiber Flow (117 from 110+) also produced a smart performance to win the John of Gaunt Stakes, bouncing back to the sort of form he showed when winning the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle last season. He had been brought down at York on his previous outing but showed that incident hadn't left its mark as he came through strongly to win by a length with a bit in hand. That effort showed Tiber Flow is as effective on turf as on the all-weather and as good over seven furlongs as at six.

There were some exciting two-year-olds in action last week, including Tunbridge Wells (101P from 79P) who built on his debut promise to run out an impressive winner at the Curragh on Wednesday. Tunbridge Wells, a brother to Group 1-winning juvenile Blackbeard, had looked in need of the experience when runner-up on debut at Navan and even though he still didn't seem like the finished article at the Curragh he was well on top at the finish, powering past the post with a two-and-three-quarter-length advantage. Only stablemate Whistlejacket is rated higher among the juveniles so far this season.

Earlier on the Curragh card, Hotazhell (92p from 85P) also built on debut promise and rewarded support by landing the seven-furlong maiden. He is clearly still learning but stayed on strongly to lead inside the final 100 yards and scored by a cosy length and a quarter, with the runner-up three lengths ahead of the third. He looks up to making his mark in Group company.

Karl Burke introduced some promising juveniles last week, with Leovanni (88p) and Shareholder (83p) both impressing. Leovanni showed good speed to run out a ready two-and-a-quarter-length winner at Nottingham, while Shareholder, who was an even more expensive breeze-up purchase, had to overcome inexperience to make a winning debut in a conditions race at Beverley. He showed some likeable qualities, including a good cruising speed and game attitude, and should progress for the experience.

There was also a debut winner in the Hilary Needler at Beverley as Perfect Part (85p) sprang a big surprise for Brian Ellison. She was sent off at 125/1 but there was no fluke about the success and she ultimately scored a shade snugly after overcoming trouble in running. She had to wait for a gap over a furlong out but made good headway between rivals and kept on strongly to win by half a length.
