St James's Palace Stakes: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The St James's s Palace Stakes (16:25) at Royal Ascot on Tuesday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

One of three Group 1 contests on the opening day of Royal Ascot, the St James’s Palace Stakes (16:25) brings together the winners of Europe’s three major 2000 Guineas in a field of eight.

That trio includes Newmarket winner Notable Speech (Timeform weight-adjusted rating 137p) for ‘Hot Trainer’ Charlie Appleby. Notable Speech was unraced at two, not making his debut until late-January at Kempton, but after going on to complete a hat-trick at that track he had an interesting if rather unusual profile for a 2000 Guineas contender. But he took the big step up in grade in his stride at Newmarket on his first start on turf, not for the first time impressing with a sharp turn of foot. Always travelling strongly, Notable Speech quickened clear once leading two furlongs out, earning the ‘Horse In Focus’ flag, and will be hard to beat again with further progress likely.

A length and a half back in second in the 2000 Guineas was Rosallion (133). ‘Hot Trainer’ Richard Hannon’s colt did well at two when his wins included a listed race at Ascot, which earns him the ‘Horses For Courses’ flag, and the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp. While he settled better than on occasions last year when chasing home Notable Speech at Newmarket, he was no match for the winner but went on to frank that form when getting up late to beat stablemate Haatem (third at Newmarket) in the Irish 2000 Guineas after conceding first run. Rosallion has the ‘Sectional Timing’ flag for that effort and should go well again for all that turning form round with Notable Speech will be difficult.

Unlike most of these, ‘Hot Trainer’ Ed Walker’s Almaqam (127p) hasn’t been tried at Group 1 level yet but has earned his place in this field, following a maiden win at Yarmouth in April with an impressive success in the listed Heron Stakes at Sandown last time. Always ideally placed, Almaqam drew clear in the final furlong to win by three and three quarter lengths from Kikkuli in the soft ground and looks sure to improve again over this stiff mile.

Metropolitan (127) came out on top in a bunched finish to the French 2000 Guineas, the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, and that leaves him with more to find against the other Guineas winners. The winner of both his starts at two, Metropolitan was an outsider at Longchamp following a defeat on his reappearance but showed improved form to hold on by half a length from British-trained runner-up Dancing Gemini who didn’t get such a clear run.

Things didn’t go smoothly, either, for favourite Henry Longfellow (132) who stayed on for eighth at Longchamp after getting shuffled back at halfway and wasn’t given a hard race. He’s better judged on his unbeaten record at two for ‘Hot Trainer’ Aidan O’Brien when his three wins at the Curragh included a five-length victory in the National Stakes. Out of high-class filly Minding, it would be no surprise to see Henry Longfellow leave his latest run behind him here.

Darlinghurst (126) is the second runner from France and while he didn’t contest the Poulains, he comes here on a roll after winning all four of his starts this year. His latest success was a comfortable one in the Group 3 Prix de Guiche at Chantilly last month and while he only had four rivals, runner-up First Look has run well since to fill the same spot in the Prix du Jockey Club.

Unquestionable (126) had smart form at two but looks Aidan O’Brien’s second string here. He was a length second to Rosallion in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere before winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf but reportedly met with a setback in the spring. He duly shaped as if better for the run when fourth in the Irish 2000 Guineas and is entitled to strip fitter now.

Alyanaabi (125) kept good company at two, finishing fourth to Rosallion in that listed race at Ascot and runner-up to City of Troy in the Dewhurst Stakes, with a win in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket in between. However, he was a bit keen on his first start at a mile and could only plug on for fifth in the 2000 Guineas so he’s another with work to do to turn that form around.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Notable Speech looks to have all the attributes of a top-class miler, possessing both a high cruising speed and a sharp turn of foot, and can confirm his Newmarket 2000 Guineas superiority over Rosallion, who has gone on to win the Irish version. Almaqam was good in the Heron Stakes at Sandown and may prove best of the rest.
