Sandown Mile: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The Sandown Mile (15:00) on Friday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

Sandown’s two-day meeting begins with a Flat card with the highlight being the Group 2 Sandown Mile (15:00) in which the trainers of the last three winners are all represented in this year’s field of seven.

Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore teamed up to win the 2022 edition with Lights On and the same combination can strike again with Nostrum (131). Still lightly raced, he looked a 2000 Guineas contender early in his career, winning his first two starts at two, including the Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket, before finishing third to Chaldean in the Dewhurst Stakes. He was then an impressive winner on his belated return last year in a listed race at Newmarket but hasn’t been seen since finishing lame in the Strensall Stakes at York in August. His yard got off the mark for the year last week and Nostrum can make another winning return here.

Lord North (133) represents John & Thady Gosden who won this with Palace Pier three years ago. He’s had a couple of runs already this year in the Winter Derby at Southwell and the Dubai Turf at Meydan, races which he won on his only starts in 2023. This time he found Military Order a length too good in the Winter Derby and was below form when mid-division in the Dubai Turf which he was bidding to win for the fourth year in a row. He drops down in grade here and has William Buick on board for the first time.

Roger Varian’s Charyn (131) has a run under his belt too and earned the ‘Horse In Focus’ flag when returning with a win in the listed Doncaster Mile last month, getting cover from a strong headwind that day before being driven clear to beat Astral Beau by three and a half lengths. Third behind Paddington in both the St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes last year, Charyn has every chance if repeating his latest effort under less testing conditions this time.

Poker Face (127) and Flight Plan (123) meet again after less than a length separated them in a listed race at Pontefract last summer. Both went on to better things afterwards, with Poker Face also winning his next two starts in France, including the Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Longchamp, before finishing second in another Group 2 at Milan on his final outing. He returns in first-time cheekpieces here. Flight Plan improved once ridden more positively last year and ended the season winning the Group 2 Dullingham Park Stakes at Leopardstown, making all to beat Buckaroo by a length and a quarter, and he’s respected if fully tuned up.

Witch Hunter (127) was fourth in the same listed contest at Pontefract but notched a couple of big wins in a busy campaign, landing the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury. He’s not fully proven over a mile, however, and shaped as though amiss when last behind Poker Face at Longchamp on his final run last year.

Hot Trainer’ Charlie Hills won this last year with Mutasaabeq when the race was switched to Newmarket but eight-year-old Pogo (123) is another who might be better off over shorter these days and likely to prove vulnerable to some younger rivals. He drew a blank last year though his fourth place in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on his final start was a smart effort after making much of the running.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Nostrum has looked like a potential star at times in his short career to date, including when successful on his return as a three-year-old, so Sir Michael Stoute's colt is fancied to repeat the feat at the expense of Lord North, who was unable to land a fourth successive victory in the Dubai Turf at Meydan last month but rates a major player with William Buick on board for the first time. Charyn was impressive at Doncaster last month so he's another who shouldn't be far away too.
