Punchestown Champion Chase: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The Punchestown Champion Chase (17:25) is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

The Punchestown Festival kicks off on Tuesday with the Champion Chase (17:25) forming the middle leg of three Grade 1s on the card.

Among the nine-runner field is Captain Guinness (Timeform weight-adjusted rating 172) who made the most of El Fabiolo's non-completion and Jonbon's absence to win the Champion Chase at Cheltenham and finally make the breakthrough in Grade 1 chase after hitting the frame on eight occasions in such events. The Champion Chase ultimately became a good opportunity for Captain Guinness and he didn't need to improve on the pick of his high-class form to beat the reopposing Gentleman de Mee by a length and a half, always looking in control despite idling up the run-in.

Dinoblue (172) contested the Mares' Chase at the Festival, finishing runner-up to Limerick Lace, but in hindsight she'd have had a cracking chance in the Champion Chase based on the form she showed when finishing in advance of Captain Guinness and Gentleman de Mee but behind El Fabiolo in the Dublin Chase.

Dinoblue progressed well over fences last season, winning handicaps at Fairyhouse and at this meeting after finishing second in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham, and she has proved better than ever this term. She won a Grade 3 at Naas on her return and then made the Grade 1 breakthrough at Leopardstown over Christmas, slamming Gentleman de Mee by seven and a half lengths in a race which was made easier by Dysart Dynamo falling and Captain Guinness pulling up. Dinoblue held strong form claims in the Mares' Chase but, up in trip, she wasn't seen to best effect under a more patient ride as she conceded first run to the winner and was unable to peg her back despite staying on strongly. That earned her the Horse In Focus Flag, suggesting she would likely be of interest next time, while she also has the Hot Trainer Flag due to the continued good form of the Willie Mullins stable.

Mullins also runs Gentleman de Mee (170), Saint Sam (169) and Dysart Dynamo (161?). Gentleman de Mee is a Grade 1-winning two-mile chaser (he landed the 2023 Dublin Chase) and ran up to his best when chasing home Captain Guinness at Cheltenham so is respected. Dysart Dynamo and Saint Sam have a bit more to prove, with the former not seen since falling at the final fence when a remote third behind Dinoblue at Leopardstown over Christas and the latter pulled up when a short-price favourite for a Grade 2 at Fairyhouse four weeks ago. However, Saint Sam is probably best forgiven that effort as he did too much too soon and it wouldn't be a big surprise to see this enthusiastic front-runner give a bold sight on a rare try at two miles.

Banbridge (174) also needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort but has the form to be a big player if doing so. He enjoyed a productive first campaign over fences last season, notably winning a Grade 1 over two and a half miles at Aintree, and he made a successful return to action in the Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton in January, edging out subsequent Ascot Chase winner Pic d'Orhy. Banbridge held good claims on form in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham but he failed to give his running, seemingly struggling to cope with the testing going. He was handed the Horse In Focus Flag with a Melling Chase bid on better ground in mind, but even though this is a different test over a shorter trip he still looks like a big player if the forecast showers stay away. He's fitted with cheekpieces for the first time.

Godon Elliott, who like Willie Mullins has the Hot Trainer Flag, is represented by Ash Tree Meadow (166) and Fil Dor (165), though they are both probably playing for place money at best unless all the market principals disappoint. Captain Guinness' trainer Henry de Bromhead runs Maskada (161) who comfortably beat Dinoblue in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham last season but whereas the runner-up has progressed markedly she has largely been below that level since.

Timeform's Analyst Verdict:

Dinoblue has come a long way in the last 12 months and following her fine effort at Cheltenham, can win at this meeting for the second season running. Banbridge is fresh and looks set for a big run in first-time cheekpieces. Queen Mother 1-2 Captain Guinness and Gentleman de Mee are obvious players too.

Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:

174 Banbridge
173 Dinoblue
172 Captain Guinness
170 Gentleman de Mee
169 Saint Sam
169 Ash Tree Meadow
165 Fil Dor
161 Maskada
161? Dysart Dynamo
