Nell Gwyn Stakes: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The Nell Gwyn Stakes, due off at 15:35 at Newmarket on Wednesday, is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

Wednesday’s Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes shares top billing with the Earl of Sefton Stakes 35 minutes earlier, but with all eyes looking forward to the big spring Flat races it’s the fillies’ Group 3, due off at 15:35, that we will concentrate on.

Timeform weight-adjusted ratings are topped by Dance Sequence (117p) who currently shares 1000 Guineas favouritism with Fallen Angel. From a successful family, Dance Sequence was unbeaten over both Newmarket courses at two, winning her maiden (by half a length from Upscale) and the Oh So Sharp Stakes (beat Skellet by a neck in a seven-runner event, overcoming greenness to lead in the final 50 yards). She is a most exciting prospect for 2024, and, with today’s race likely to be run to suit, can begin her season with a win.

Matrika (114p), who is from the family of Coventry Stakes/Prix Morny winner The Wow Signal, showed plenty of pace in her two wins over six furlongs at the Curragh last season, making all when last seen in the Airlie Stud Stakes following on from a fine length-second to Porta Fortuna in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She’s a general 20/1 chance for the 1000 Guineas and this race will help inform whether she is likely to get the mile there; the feeling is that she will get this seven furlong trip at least.

Gushing Gold (106) was never far from the pace when winning a nursery off a mark of 87 at York last August, but was well below form behind Dance Sequence in the Oh So Sharp Stakes on her final start. Along with fellow nursery graduate Lexington Belle (105), she lacks the scope of the likes of True Cyan (98p), who is out of a multiple Group 3 winner in Britain/Ireland, and who impressed when winning a 17-runner maiden over C&D by 1½ lengths from Strutting, quickening to lead over a furlong out and well on top at the finish. She looks sure to go on to better things.

Spiritual (103p) will need to settle better if she is to fulfil her undoubted potential. She made a promising debut when winning a 14-runner minor event at Leicester by two lengths from Surveyor and was better than the bare result when 5½ lengths fourth to Carla's Way in the Rockfel Stakes over C&D on her other start at two, making her effort earlier than ideal having raced keenly out in front.

Although unable to add to her debut win at Ripon, Pretty Crystal (105) showed better form in defeat in stronger company after, rounding off her season with a two lengths fourth to Prime Art in the Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr. The significant step up in trip should suit Born To Rock (97) on breeding but it will need to bring about serious improvement, and a bigger threat could come from Southwell minor event winner Kathmandu (95p). Heritage House (85) completes the field but looks up against it.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Dance Sequence has the scope to make a smart 3-y-o and is already proven at this level/track having won the Oh So Sharp Stakes over C&D in the autumn, so she can cement her placing as one of the favourites for the 1000 Guineas. Matrika picked up a weak Group 2 at the Curragh when last seen but she escapes a penalty and the form of her second in the Albany the previous week makes her a clear next best. True Cyan has plenty of improvement to find but did the job nicely on debut here in September.
