Lockinge Stakes: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

The Lockinge Stakes (15:35) at Newbury on Saturday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

The Lockinge Stakes (15:35), the first Group 1 of the season for older horses in Britain, takes centre stage at Newbury on Saturday and has attracted a field of 11, including one of the highest-rated horses in training in Big Rock.

Big Rock (Timeform weight-adjusted rating 141) was runner-up in the French Derby at Chantilly, the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville (behind the reopposing Inspiral) and the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp but gained a deserved Group 1 success in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day, showing improved form to make all and register an emphatic six-length success. That was his final start for Christopher Head and he starts out here for Maurizio Guarnieri.

Inspiral (140) beat Big Rock by a length and a quarter to land a second successive Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville last August and went on to complete a top-level hat-trick in the autumn with wins in the Sun Chariot at Newmarket and Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on her first attempt at a mile and a quarter. Big Rock's performance in the QEII is the best single piece of form on offer but Inspiral's 3 lb sex allowance narrows the gap.

Big Rock and Inspiral are starting out for the season, but Charyn (132) has already demonstrated his wellbeing by winning a listed race at Doncaster and the Group 2 Sandown Mile this term, stepping up on the form he had shown as a three-year-old. He ought to give another good account of himself.

Poker Face (131) enjoyed a productive campaign as a four-year-old, winning a listed race at Pontefract, a Group 3 at Deauville and a Group 2 at Longchamp, and he ran well on his return when runner-up to Charyn in the Sandown Mile. He was only beaten a length and a quarter and gave the winner 3 lb, so there shouldn't be much between the pair here.

Audience (130) has been much improved since being gelded and fitted with a hood, and he showed smart form to win a seven-furlong Group 3 at Newmarket on his reappearance last year. He was runner-up in Group 2s at York and Doncaster later in the campaign but was below his best when third of four in similar company on his final start of the season, and he needs to find extra here on his first start at a mile.

Dear My Friend (130) developed into a smart performer on the all-weather at the start of this year, winning three times over a mile, including a listed race at Lingfield. He was disappointing at Newcastle on Good Friday, though, and this surely asks too much back on turf.

Hi Royal (130) was placed in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Irish version at the Curragh last May but lost his way badly in the second half of his three-year-old campaign. He got back on track after wind surgery when third to Ottoman Fleet in a nine-furlong Group 3 at Newmarket on his reappearance in April.

Royal Scotsman (128) was placed for the second time in Group 1 company at Newmarket when third to Chaldean, half a length behind Hi Royal, in last year's 2000 Guineas. He was well held in the Irish 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace subsequently and needs to get his career back on track after 11 months off. He wears a tongue tie for the first time.

Flight Plan (127) took time to find his feet last year but ended the season on the up, culminating with a breakthrough success at pattern level in a Group 2 over a mile at Leopardstown in September. There's every chance he'll make up into an even better four-year-old but this is a very tough starting point.

Witch Hunter (127) is a smart performer who bagged the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot and the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes here (both over seven furlongs) last summer. He has returned with two respectable efforts this spring but was behind Charyn and Poker School in the Sandown Mile on his reappearance and this looks too tough.

Real World (120+) chased home Baaeed in this in 2022 but doesn't seem the same force these days, for all he won a mile listed event in Bahrain in March. He was well held in a Group 1 on Dubai World Cup night last time.

Timeform's Analyst Verdict:

An excellent renewal. The possibility of ease in the ground just tips things in the favour of BIG ROCK over Inspiral, who has shown her peak form on good or firmer. A change of stable muddies the waters slightly regarding the selection but he was most impressive in the QEII at Ascot when last seen. Recent Sandown Mile 1-2 Charyn and Poker Face look best of the rest.

Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:

132 Charyn
131 Poker Face
