Jockey Club Stakes: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

The Jockey Club Stakes (16:10) at Newmarket on Friday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

Newmarket's Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes, due off at 16:10 on Friday, has always tended to be a small-field-affair, and one which was often dominated by trainer Mark Johnston. He won four renewals between 2010 and 2021, and then added a fifth with his son Charlie on the licence, when Living Legend secured the 2022 running.

However, the Middleham outfit didn’t have a runner 12 months ago, and, with the same scenario this time around, Charlie Appleby will be hoping to fill the breach as he did with Hurricane Lane last season.

Appleby's main hope appears to be Castle Way (Timeform weight-adjusted rating of 121), the mount of William Buick. He's a smart performer who clearly loves Newmarket, unbeaten in two starts on the Rowley Mile as well as having a first and second to his name on the July Course. He won the Bahrain Trophy (by a head from Tower of London) last season and his reappearance run behind Bold Act in the Dubai City of Gold at Meydan last time can be ignored as he was subsequently found to have bled.

The yard’s second string, on jockey bookings if not ratings, is King of Conquest (123). He won handicaps at Sakhir and here, along with a listed race at Goodwood (by a neck from Francesco Clemente) in 2023, and wasn't disgraced when four lengths fourth to the progressive George Scott-trained Isle of Jura in a listed race at Sakhir last time, doing his best work at the finish. His temperament is somewhat under suspicion (tends to hang), though.

Time Lock is another who put the miles in last season, winning a listed race at Craon in France as well as showing a fine turn of foot when landing the Princess Royal Stakes over C&D. She was only four and a half lengths seventh of 14 to Poptronic in the Group 1 Fillies' & Mares' Stakes at Ascot on her final start that year but commands plenty of respect now dropping in grade. She has a solid record fresh (albeit without winning), loves the course, and looks a leading contender as long as the race isn’t run at a dawdle (usually held up).

Tactics can be crucial in these small-field events, perhaps why the Johnstons had so much success with their prominently-ridden horses, and the likeliest pacesetter here is Outbox (118). He produced creditable efforts on his final three starts in 2023, including when second in a listed race on the July Course (half a length behind Kemari) and in the Stockholm Cup International at Bro Park (a length and a half behind Espen Hill). He has a bit to find on ratings but shouldn’t be discounted too readily, despite only managing to finish third and fourth in the last two renewals of this race.

Timeform weight-adjusted ratings are topped by Astro King (128). He’s been a credit to connections since switching to his new yard before the start of last season, winning at York and here (Cambridgeshire, by half a length from Greek Order) in 2023. He was a creditable length second to Ottoman Fleet in the Earl of Sefton Stakes here last time, keeping on well in the final furlong and shaping as if likely to stay further than the extended mile and a quarter. A straightforward sort, he must go well if lasting home.

The field is completed by the beautifully-bred Naqeeb (117), a half-brother to three winners, including the top-class Baaeed and high-class winner up to a mile and three-quarters Hukum (both by Sea The Stars). He won a minor event at Kempton and a mile and three-quarter handicap at Haydock (by a length and a quarter from Blindedbythelights) and was ridden more patiently when only six and a half lengths third to Middle Earth in a listed race at Ascot last time. He has subsequently been gelded but looks a fascinating contender kept in training, although this might not be enough of a test of his undoubted stamina reserves.

Timeform Analyst Verdict:

Harry Charlton has his team in fine form so the suggestion is Time Lock who is 2-2 over C&D, including a Group 3 last autumn. With doubts about Astro King's stamina it could be that the chief threat comes from Godolphin's Castle Way.

Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:

128 Astro King
125 Time Lock
123 King of Conquest
121 Castle Way
118 Outbox
117 Naqeeb
