Gladness Stakes: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The Gladness Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday, due off at 16:00, is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

It looks an interesting renewal of the Gladness Stakes, a seven-furlong listed race for horses aged three years and over, and Joseph O'Brien is represented by two horses in Jumbly (118+) and San Andreas (105).

The pick of them looks to be Jumbly, who is at least 8 lb clear of her rivals on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, and has some decidedly smart form to her name. Her last win came in a Group 3 at Ascot in July 2022 when trained by Harry & Roger Charlton, but she acquitted herself well faced with some stiff tasks for this yard last season, her best effort coming when a close third in a Grade 2 at Saratoga. Jumbly wasn't disgraced at the top level on her final two starts and she looks the class act down into listed company on her return.

Seven-year-old Big Gossey (109+) loves it at the Curragh - he's a five-time course winner - and his last win came in heavy ground over this course and distance in November. He hasn't been at his best in two starts back so far this year, beaten 11 lengths over five furlongs on his return and even further over a mile at Leopardstown last time, but the return to this trip should suit and he could go well at a price if back to anywhere near his best form.

Another to consider is the Ger Lyons-trained Mutasarref (110), who is a course and distance winner and held his form well last season, deservedly getting his head back in front in a heavy-ground listed event over a mile at Leopardstown in October. He returned to near his best form on that occasion, travelling smoothly throughout and displaying a determined attitude to hold off the persistent runner-up. Conditions won't be a problem for him and he represents an in-form yard, so he has to be respected despite a penalty.

Aidan O'Brien has tasted success in this race before and he relies on Henry Adams (109) in this year's renewal. He is the sole three-year-old in the field and looked potentially smart when winning his first two starts last season, notably a Group 3 at Leopardstown. He was highly tried on his next two starts, and wasn't disgraced when six lengths fourth to stablemate City of Troy in the Dewhurst at Newmarket. Henry Adams can easily have his run at Meydan last month overlooked as he never looked happy on dirt and he remains with potential back on turf.

Yosemite Valley (110) completes the line-up for Donnacha O'Brien. He showed useful form last season, landing the odds to get off the mark in a six-furlong maiden at this course, and went like the best horse at the weights when beaten three quarters of a length over this course and distance on his next start. He was getting going all too late on his return in a listed event over six furlongs at Cork last month and will be well suited by a return to this longer trip.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Though Jumbly has done most of her racing on fast ground, she was an easy winner of a listed event on heavy going as a 2-y-o and this represents a good opportunity for her to regain the winning thread. Big Gossey needs to bounce back but he is certainly capable of a bold show and is an appealing option for forecast purposes. Mutasarref and Yosemite Valley both look fairly solid but likely favourite Henry Adams is probably worth taking on given the recent record of 3-y-os in this race.

118+ Jumbly

110 Mutasarref

110 Yosemite Valley

109+ Big Gossy
