Around The Tracks: A tip for each meeting on Saturday

ArticleImage

Timeform provide a selection for each of the nine meetings due to take place in Britain on Saturday.

Justcallmepete - 14:45 Haydock

Justcallmepete enjoyed a productive campaign last season, winning three times, and he caught the eye to some extent back on turf when finishing midfield in a competitive sprint handicap at Newbury last month. He is justifiably lower in the weights on turf, yet to win on grass but effective on it, and he would have arguably finished closer last time with a clearer passage, finishing with running left at the line. Seven furlongs at this track shouldn't be a problem and he finds himself in an easier race now, so is taken to launch another bold bid with the headgear retained.

Illinois - 15:00 Lingfield

Illinois looked a horse right out of the top draw when making a winning debut last season and he was far from disgraced upped into Group 1 company just 15 days later when third to promising stablemate Los Angles in France. Illinois was turned over at odds-on in the Ballysax Stakes on his return (a place behind The Euphrates), but he looked in need of the run and that also came on heavy ground. Plenty of Aidan O'Brien's horses having been coming on a bundle for the run and he promises to be suited by this longer trip.

Turn Up The Heat - 16:20 Ascot

Turn Up The Heat showed just modest form on her first two starts on the all-weather, but she showed much improved form after three months off switched to turf when runner-up to another promising filly in a maiden over a mile at Bath last month. She was doing all of her best work at the finish that day, and she is strongly fancied to improve further now moving up to a mile and a quarter on handicap debut (plenty of stamina in her pedigree). An opening mark of 79 seems fair and the booking of William Buick is another positive.

Rukaana - 16:40 Nottingham

Rukaana progressed with each run last year, opening his account at the fourth attempt on his handicap debut at Wolverhampton in October, and showing much improved form in the process, easily drawing clear in the final furlong. He was gelded afterwards, but looked rusty on his return to action in soft ground at Doncaster last month, outpaced and boxing on in the closing stages. He is entitled to strip fitter now and should be up to winning more races from this sort of mark.

I Am Max - 17:45 Hexham

I Am Max has made a promising start to his career, attracting good support when making a winning debut in a bumper at Carlisle in February, and she maintained her unbeaten record when landing the odds on hurdling debut at Ayr just three weeks later. He only won by three quarters of a length on that occasion, but had much more in hand than the bare margin suggests, just pushed out under a hands-and-heels ride, and there should be plenty more to come from him, especially over this longer trip.

Land Genie - 19:35 Warwick

Land Genie is a half-brother to the exceptional Constitution Hill and, while he doesn't quite look like reaching such heights himself, he has shown ability, and starts life in handicaps from a lowly mark. He shaped like a stayer when winning a bumper and he has left the same impression over hurdles so far, so he could be worth chancing now making his handicap debut over this longer trip, from an opening mark which looks quite lenient based on his bumper form.

Nikovo - 19:55 Leicester

Nikovo has made an excellent start for David O'Meara, showing the benefit of a breathing operation when making a winning start over a mile at Newcastle in March, and he did so in grand style. He followed up with more in hand than the neck margin suggests at Chelmsford earlier this month, too, forced to make his move widest of all off the home turn and doing well to get to one that had got first run on the inner. He was a winner on turf when trained in France and remains a horse to be positive about.
