2000 Guineas: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The 2000 Guineas (15:35) at Newmarket on Saturday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

The 2000 Guineas (15:35), the first classic of the season, takes centre stage at Newmarket on Saturday and there's a small but select field with only 11 set to go to post (the only time there was a smaller field this century was in 2017).

Among the field is last year's champion juvenile City of Troy (Timeform weight-adjusted rating 137p) who won all three starts in the style of an exciting prospect, including the Dewhurst Stakes on his final outing. City of Troy, a wide-margin winner of the Superlative Stakes on his second start, was sent off an odds-on favourite for the Dewhurst and he didn't give his supporters many anxious moments as he travelled smoothly at the head of affairs and was soon in command after he was shaken up over two furlongs out. He powered three and a half lengths clear, earning the Horse In Focus Flag and registering a Timeform performance rating of 125 which has been bettered in the race by only Frankel this century.

That Dewhurst form is good enough to win a typical edition of the 2000 Guineas and it places City of Troy 6 lb clear of his nearest rival on Timeform's figures. The step up to a mile is unlikely to cause a problem and his trainer Aidan O'Brien, who is bidding to win the race for the 11th time, has the Hot Trainer Flag to highlight the good form of the yard.

City of Troy's closest rival on the figures is Notable Speech (131p) who was unraced as a juvenile by Charlie Appleby (also has the Hot Trainer Flag) but has made rapid strides on the all-weather over the winter, winning all three starts over a mile at Kempton. Notable Speech has only contested a couple of conditions events since winning his maiden but he's produced some very stylish displays, showing a sharp turn of foot to beat his rivals with more in hand than the bare margins would suggest.

He should have been disadvantaged by being held up in a steadily run event last time, but he picked up powerfully, earning the Horse In Focus Flag and a significant sectional upgrade (has the Sectional Timing Flag) that is reflected in his rating. He needs to prove his effectiveness on turf and an undulating course, but he is clearly an exciting prospect.

Also prominent on ratings is Rosallion (129p) who won three of his four starts as a juvenile, including the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on his final outing. He had suffered an odds-on defeat in the Champagne Stakes, where he raced too keenly without cover, but he proved better than ever at Longchamp, keeping on well after getting the gap to beat subsequent Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Unquestionable by a length. He hasn't shown everything he has to offer and, while he'll need to settle better on his first start at a mile, he's entitled to plenty of respect here.

Rosallion is the first string for Richard Hannon who is also represented by Craven Stakes winner Haatem (125). He looked exposed after nine starts as a juvenile but found a big chunk of improvement on his return and first start at a mile, producing a smart performance to win by three and a half lengths. Further improvement is required here, however.

Ten Bob Tony (117p) also won at the Craven meeting, landing a conditions race from subsequent winner Boiling Point, earning the Horses For Courses Flag. He stayed on well and will be suited by a mile but he'll need to find a big chunk of improvement.

The others who have been seen this year are Inisherin (116p) and Night Raider (117p), two of the least exposed runners in the line-up. Inisherin shaped with promise when runner-up over this course and distance on debut in September and confirmed that promise to win a Newcastle novice in March, looking a potentially smart sort as he quickened three and a half lengths clear. This is a big step up in class, however.

Night Raider also takes a big step up in class but has created a big impression in two outings on the all-weather at Southwell, cruising nine lengths clear on debut and then sprinting to a five-length success last time in the style of one who can make his mark in pattern company. Like Notable Speech, he has the Sectional Timing Flag after quickening up well.

Alyanaabi (124) was no match for City of Troy in the Dewhurst but he ran well to finish second, continuing his theme of run-by-run improvement and building on his narrow success in the Tattersalls Stakes at this course (has the Horses for Courses Flag). He should be suited by the step up to a mile but it's hard to see him reversing form with City of Troy.

Iberian (121) was a disappointing sixth in the Dewhurst but prior to that had chased home Haatem in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and beaten Rosallion in the Champagne Stakes. Rosallion clearly wasn't at his best in the Champagne, however.

Ghostwriter (122p) won all three starts last season, signing off with victory in the Royal Lodge Stakes over this course and distance. He showed a good turn of foot to run out a decisive winner on that occasion, and his sizeable physique suggests he'll make an even better three-year-old.

Task Force (123p) has a classic-winning pedigree, being by Frankel out of Special Duty who was awarded the race in the 1000 Guineas and French 1000 Guineas. Task Force made a pleasing start to his career by winning a Salisbury maiden and listed race at Ripon and he showed better form in defeat when runner-up in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes. He was unable to match the turn of speed shown by the winner, Vandeek, but stuck to his task well and, as a strong, good sort on looks, he appeals as one who could improve at three, particularly now upped to a mile.

Timeform Analyst Verdict:

Aidan O'Brien has made little secret of the fact that he regards CITY OF TROY as the best 2-y-o he's trained and this clear Timeform top rated can provide the master of Ballydoyle with a record-extending 11th win in the first Classic of the season. Rosallion was also highly promising at 2 and can give the selection most to do ahead of Godolphin's Notable Speech, who didn't make his debut until January but has quickly established himself as a top prospect with 3 AW wins at Kempton.

Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:

137p City of Troy
131p Notable Speech
129p Rosallion
125 Haatem
124 Alyanaabi
123p Task Force
122p Ghostwriter
121 Iberian
117p Night Raider
117p Ten Bob Tony
116p Inisherin
