A competitive class 3 handicap over the extended mile (19:00) provides the highlight of Wolverhampton’s Tuesday evening card with a field of nine declared.
A couple of these have had some time off since the spring and one of those, Chantico (Timeform weight-adjusted rating 102), makes the most appeal having been bought out of Roger Varian’s yard for 16,000 guineas this autumn to join Adrian Keatley. The lightly-raced four-year-old resumes on a competitive mark and is back on an artificial surface after gaining his only win to date in a novice at Lingfield in March in good style on his all-weather debut. He was well held in a hood when last seen at Newbury, but that was on heavy ground so can probably be excused the run.
Talis Evolvere (100) has been in action more recently and should go close stepping back up in trip after shaping as though in need of further over seven furlongs here last time when a keeping-on length second to Sterling Knight. He’s another who hasn’t had much racing.
Queen of Ipanema (99) is the other who returns from a break and does so for an in-form yard with George Boughey having the ‘Hot Trainer’ flag. She too finished down the field when last seen in April but can have that run at Lingfield overlooked as she had no room on the inner when trying to make headway. She boasts a fine strike-rate on the all-weather, having run up a five-timer late in 2022, with three of those wins coming at Wolverhampton, and she was successful again more recently at Newcastle in March. She’ll be a threat if fully tuned up.
Urban Sprawl (98) gained his only win of a busy three-year-old campaign back in May at Goodwood but he’s a largely consistent type and should give it another good shot after running third to Civil Law over a slightly longer trip here last time.
Young Fire (98) is another who’s been kept busy but has four wins to show for it this year, the first of those over this course and distance and the most recent one coming at Leicester in August. He was a creditable third back here two starts ago but is likely to find a few of his younger rivals too good.
Gincident (97) is a dual course-and-distance winner and successful three times in all earlier in the year but will have to improve on his latest effort when fifth over seven furlongs here on his return from a four-month break.
Bottom weight Visibility (98) is a Wolverhampton regular and gained a fifth course win, over seven furlongs, early last month, but that was only a class 5 contest (beaten in a similar event since) and is likely to find this too competitive.
The pair of three-year-olds at the top of the weights, Sceptic (96) and Woodstock City (94) both make their debuts for Ian Williams, having formerly been with Andrew Balding and Christopher Head respectively, but neither look that well handicapped starting out for their new yard.
Sceptic won twice earlier in the year, including a maiden at Lingfield on his only previous start on the all-weather, but didn’t run much of a race last time, while Woodstock City gained his second win in France in a handicap on Deauville’s polytrack in August and left his previous stable for €80,000.
Timeform analyst’s verdict
Chantico finished out with the washing in a Newbury handicap when last seen during the spring, but the testing conditions may have contributed to that low-key performance and this lightly-raced four-year-old is of strong interest back down in trip on debut for new connections. Next on the list is Talis Evolvere, who shaped as though this stiffer test would be in his favour when runner-up over a shorter trip here a fortnight ago. Queen of Ipanema and Urban Sprawl are others with claims in a competitive race.
