There's good-quality action at the Curragh on Wednesday, including the £50,000 Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Premier Handicap (19:00). Ten runners are set to go to post in the mile-and-a-quarter event, including the lightly raced White Caviar (102p) who heads Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings.
White Caviar, a sister to St Leger winner Galileo Chrome, progressed well last season, getting off the mark in a strong maiden at Listowel on her third start before taking another step forward to make a successful handicap debut at Gowran Park on her final start of the campaign.
Those victories were achieved over a mile and a half, but White Caviar's strength at the finish suggested she would benefit from a step up in trip. She predicatably had no problem staying the mile and three-quarters when third in listed company on her return at Gowran Park last month, keeping on strongly close home, and she is entitled to be shaper with that outing under her belt. She returns to handicap company here on a fair mark and, still open to improvement, she makes plenty of appeal.
The main danger to White Caviar could be Burren Song (101) who has been in terrific form of late and completed the hat-trick at Leopardstown last month.
Burren Song was seen to good effect in that mile-and-a-half handicap, getting first run on the second who had to wait for a gap, and he was all out to hold on at the end. But it was still a career-best effort from Burren Song who will have no problem stepping back up in trip and is still on a fair mark after a 5 lb rise for his latest effort.
Hell Bent (101), who finished third to Burren Song on his reappearance for Jessica Harrington at Leopardstown last month, is also prominent on Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings. He meets the winner on 5 lb better terms here and represents an in-form yard (has the Hot Trainer Flag) so looks likely to give a good account in first-time cheekpieces, for all he's unproven at this trip.
Harrington also runs Mellow Magic (99) who made a winning start for the yard at Gowran Park in April, when she made the most of having the run of the race. She wasn't disgraced in eighth listed company last time (White Caviar was third in the same race) and she can't be discounted back down in grade.
The weights are headed by My Mate Mozzie (99) who is a useful sort over hurdles and has also shown ability on the Flat, hitting the frame in valuable and competitive handicaps at Leopardstown and Naas. He's making his first start since finishing runner-up in the November Handicap last year but is entitled to plenty of respect.
Nusret (93+) is another with useful form over hurdles. He won the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle at Kempton and then hit the frame in Grade 1 events at Aintree and Punchestown. He's on a stiff enough mark based solely on his Flat efforts but he's not fully exposed in this sphere and his performances over hurdles offer encouragement.
Tony Martin runs two here in Vultan (95+) and Firstman (97). Vultan met trouble in running and shaped better than the distance beaten would suggest when ninth of ten behind Burren Song last time, but clearly has something to find. Firstman is another who wasn't seen to best effect when fifth at Haydock last time as he was held up in a race in which the winner dictated. As a hold-up performer he needs things to drop right, though, and others make greater appeal.
Almuhit (96) Sheishybrid (100) weren't seen to best effect when down the field in a handicap over course and distance last time but others hold more persuasive claims, for all Almuhit's trainer, Denis Hogan, has the Hot Trainer Flag and Sheishybrid is probably still on a fair mark and has the Horses For Courses Flag (is effective at courses with similar characteristics).
Timeform's Analyst Verdict
WHITE CAVIAR stayed on well into third in a listed contest at Gowran last time and she's open to further improvement back in handicap company, so she gets the nod over the thriving Burren Song. Hell Bent is another one to consider with cheekpieces applied for the first time.
Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:
102p White Caviar
101 Hell Bent
100 Sheishybrid
99 Mellow Magic
99 Burren Song
99 My Mate Mozzie
97 Firstman
96 Almuhit
95+ Vultan
93+ Nusret
