16:15 Ludlow: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

The 16:15 at Ludlow on Thursday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

Ludlow stages one of its long-standing races, the Forbra Gold Cup Handicap Chase (16:15) over three miles, named after the 50/1 winner of the 1932 Grand National who was locally owned. The field of seven for this year’s renewal is unlikely to contain any future Grand National winners, though there are some fairly useful chasers among them.

Top weight Arizona Cardinal (139) might not be the most consistent, having been pulled up twice between his two wins this term, but he bounced back to form for ‘Hot Trainer’ Stuart Edmunds at Leicester last month to gain his third win from six completed starts over fences. Typically travelling well close to the pace, he drew clear between the final two fences to beat O’Connell by just under five lengths and after that ready success he looks capable of following up off a 5 lb higher mark with underfoot conditions to suit.

His main danger looks to be Duke of Deception (137) at the other end of the handicap for Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero, assuming he takes his chance here having also been declared at Bangor the day before. He returned with a win over hurdles at Wetherby in the autumn, but also won twice over fences last term and ran his best race back over the larger obstacles when six and a half lengths second to Snipe at Aintree and would have good claims off the same mark here.

Midnight Mary (138) is a consistent mare for ‘Hot Trainer’ Lucy Wadham and she seemed to excel herself when a plugging-on third to Brides Hill in a listed mares’ chase at Huntingdon last time. While the return to this longer trip is in her favour, the 4 lb rise she picked up for that effort could make things a bit harder for her.

One True King (136x) is a sketchy jumper of fences and not the most consistent, but he’s run some of his better races lately under 7 lb claiming amateur Mr Toby McCain-Mitchell, including when five and a half lengths second to Rockinastorm in an amateurs event over this course and distance last week.

Hardy Fella (136) won over hurdles here last spring and has shown a similar level of form switched to fences this season, getting up for a narrow win in a handicap at Fontwell in November. However, he hasn’t built on that in a couple of starts since, even though well backed at Hereford last time where he was already struggling when making a bad mistake two out.

Magic Dancer (125+) and Special Acceptance (132) are the two oldest runners in the field and have something to find against their younger rivals. Course winner Magic Dancer won a veterans event at Cheltenham on his return last season but hasn’t shown enough this term to make him interesting despite the fact he’s coming down the weights. Special Acceptance was a creditable fourth in the Sussex National at Plumpton last time after some late mistakes but is on a long losing run and more is needed with blinkers replacing cheekpieces for the first time.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Arizona Cardinal's overall profile hints at consistency issues but, given the manner of his victory at Leicester last month, Stuart Edmunds' 8-y-o is fancied to make light of a 5 lb rise and record a fourth success over the larger obstacles. Duke of Deception kept mistakes to a minimum back over fences when runner-up at Aintree on Boxing Day, so he heads up the opposition, with Midnight Mary and One True King taken to fight out minor honours.
