15:50 Newmarket: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The 15:50 at Newmarket on Wednesday is available as a free Race Pass, which means you can view all our premium comments and ratings.

The Devils Dyke Fillies’ Handicap (15:50) brings together ten at least fairly useful fillies and mares over the Rowley Mile. Heading the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings is the unbeaten Bashkirova (106p) trained by William Haggas. The granddaughter of 1000 Guineas winner Russian Rhythm overcame greenness to make a winning debut at Nottingham in August and then followed up with a more professional display in a novice at Newcastle last month when beating a subsequent winner. Bashkirova still has some learning to do but with more improvement to come is of plenty of interest on her handicap debut.

Also having her first start in a handicap after only two runs is Ed Walker’s filly Random Harvest (104p). She too looks capable of better, having made a winning debut at Yarmouth this time last year, and was then well backed for her belated return in a novice at Kempton last month. She looked a bit short of pace in finishing third to Barshaa, a winner since, but can be expected to be sharper for that run.

State Occasion (105) comes here in good form for Ralph Beckett who has the ‘Hot trainer’ flag. She ran her best race at Newmarket last time when finishing third to Via Sistina in a valuable fillies’ handicap over a mile and a quarter but lost some momentum running into the Dip, so isn’t as proven as some of these when it comes to handling the track.

Another in-form filly to run well at Newmarket last time is George Margarson’s Farhh To Shy (103) who earned the ‘Horse in focus’ flag for her narrow defeat to Canoodled here earlier in the month. She was making headway when hampered in the final furlong which might well have cost her the race given she was beaten only a short head. A winner twice at Yarmouth in the summer, Farhh To Shy went down to a stronger stayer last time so has her stamina to prove on her first attempt at a mile.

Widaad (104) finished just behind Farhh To Shy in third in the same race at Newmarket, with Professional Widow (102) back in seventh, and both those fillies have the ‘Horses for courses’ flag. Widaad has held her form well all season for ‘Hot trainer’ George Boughey, winning at Newmarket in May and running creditably again when third at Chelmsford last time. Professional Widow won at Nottingham earlier in the season and she should be suited by the return to a mile here.

Another with the ‘Horses for courses’ flag is Madame Tantzy (103) who is not the most straightforward of mares but followed up a win at Goodwood with success in a muddling race over this course and distance.

Top weight Don’t Tell Claire (98) beat Professional Widow at Nottingham and State Occasion at Ascot in her two wins this season and ran creditably when fifth in a listed race over and course and distance last time but others look better weighted as she returns to handicap company.

Goddess of Fire (102) represents another ‘Hot trainer’, John Ryan, and has been in good form of late herself, running here under a penalty after her second win of the season at Yarmouth last week, though this is a better class of race.

The field is completed by Country Pyle (99) who has been placed in all four outings to date over longer trips but the half-sister to Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver hasn’t been let in lightly for her handicap debut.

Timeform Analyst’s Verdict

Bashkirova impressed when making it 2-2 under a penalty at Newcastle last month and, with the runner-up having boosted that form since, she's fancied to make a bold bid to maintain her 100% record now handicapping back on turf. State Occasion and Farhh To Shy arrive in good order and are feared, along with low-mileage Random Harvest.
