The pick of the action in Britain on Sunday is a good-quality £27,5000 handicap (15:45) over the extended mile at Nottingham. There are eight runners set to go to post, with Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings narrowly headed by the progressive filly Al Agaila (114p) who enjoyed a productive winter on the all-weather, winning her last three outings.
Al Agaila didn't need to improve on previous efforts to get off the mark in good style in a one-mile Kempton novice in December, but she took a big step forward when upped to a mile and a quarter on her handicap debut at Lingfield later that month, not needing to come off the bridle to win a decent prize.
She was forced to work much harder to complete the hat-trick back over a mile and a quarter at Lingfield in January, but, in winning off an 11 lb higher mark, that still represented improved form and she was value for a bit more than the winning margin of a head in a race run at a steady tempo.
Al Agaila still looks well treated after edging up 2 lb for that narrow success and also retains the Timeform 'p' to denote she likely remains capable of better. She ran well to finish placed on her only two previous outings on turf and should be able to replicate the improvement she's shown on the all-weather on this surface.
Also prominent on Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings are Point Lynas (113) and Greatgadian (113).
Point Lynas was below his best when only sixth at Newmarket on his penultimate start, but that effort can be easily excused as he attempted to make the running into a headwind. Ridden with greater patience in a competitive and valuable handicap at York last time, Point Lynas proved better than ever to finish a close-up second and he remains on a good mark after edging up 2 lb for that head defeat. His trainer Ed Bethell has the Hot Trainer Flag to highlight the good form of the yard.
Greatgadian, whose trainer Roger Varian also has the Hot Trainer Flag, finished a place behind Point Lynas when seventh at Newmarket, but he also had an excuse as he raced in the group up the centre who were at a disadvantage. Greatgadian showed enough there to suggest that he is still in good form and he has been eased 2 lb in the weights which means he is now 2 lb below his last winning mark.
Naval Commander (112) is making his first start on turf since finishing ninth in the 2021 Cambridgeshire. He has looked as good as ever on the all-weather over the winter, posting some fine efforts in defeat, but he found his good run of form coming to a halt when only fourth of five at Kempton on his latest start in April. Kevin Stott takes over in the saddle for the first time here which has resulted in the Jockey Uplift Flag being generated.
The topweight in the line-up Major Partnership (107) is an eight-year-old but produced a couple of creditable efforts at Meydan over the winter to show that he remains capable of useful form. He appears to be on a stiff enough mark, though, on his return to Britain.
Encourageable (111) developed into a useful performer last season, winning a couple of times, including in handicap company at Thirsk in September. He made little impact on his return in the Lincoln and needs to take a step forward here, though this is less competitive and he remains with relatively few miles on the clock. He is fitted with a tongue strap for the first time.
The field is completed by Yantarni (111) and Maplewood (105) who both represent Ian Williams.
Yantarni probably needed the run when only seventh at Sandown recently on his first start since leaving Charlie Appleby, while Maplewood has his first start for the yard since making the same stable switch. He doesn't appear to be on a generous mark, though.
Timeform's Analyst Verdict:
AL AGAILA left the impression that she was value for a bit extra when completing her hat-trick at Lingfield in January and, with further progress to come, she can make a winning return to action back on turf. Point Lynas is feared most after just missing out at York last time, while Greatgadian shaped as if still in form on his latest outing.
Timeform's weight-adjusted rating:
114p Al Agaila
113 Greatgadian
113 Point Lynas
112 Naval Commander
111 Yantarni
111 Encourageable
107 Major Partnership
105 Maplewood
