15:42 Redcar: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The 15:42 at Redcar on Monday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

Redcar play host to an interesting seven-race card on Monday and the mile handicap (15;42), for horses aged four or older, not only looks the most competitive, but is also the most valuable race at the meeting.

The obvious starting point is Timeform's top-rated horse on adjusted ratings, and that is the Archie Watson-trained Noble Order (108), who made the perfect start for these connections when bolting up at Newcastle in February.

He is bred to be smart and had some solid form on the all-weather when trained by Charlie Appleby, but he took his form to a new level after a 15-month absence on debut for this yard, always well positioned and his rider didn't need to get serious with him as he easily prevailed from a solid yardstick. The one question mark with him is that this will be his first start on turf, but there is nothing in his pedigree to suggest he won't prove at least as effective on it, and he appeals as being ahead of the handicapper from a revised mark of 90.

It may be Pisanello (107) who will give him most to think about. He produced a laboured effort when last seen at York in November, but he had possibly had enough for the season at that point, and that also came in a much stronger race than this. He has a solid record when fresh, goes well in testing ground, and also returns from the same mark as his last win which came in soft ground at Hamilton last summer. David O'Meara is going along nicely and a big run could be on the cards.

Another to consider is Spirit Genie (105), whose latest win came in a heavy-ground seller at Leicester in October, and he didn't at all shape badly on his return to action when finishing sixth in the Lincoln at Doncaster last month. He would have likely finished closer had he got the gaps a little sooner and he finds himself in a less-competitive environment now, while he will have no problem with the forecast ground.

Look Back Smiling (103§) isn't the most straightforward - highlighted by the Timeform squiggle attached to his rating - but recorded three wins from 18 runs last year and was better than ever when landing the 18-runner Spring Mile in heavy ground at Doncaster last month by half a length from the reopposing Thunder Roar. He was suited by the way that race developed, settling better than he has previously and coming through with a good run, so he can't be discounted following a 4 lb rise in the weights.

The aforementioned Thunder Roar (103) also won three times last year, including twice on heavy ground at York and Doncaster, but he seemingly didn't have many excuses when runner-up to Look Back Smiling at Doncaster. He is just 1 lb better off at the weights with that rival now, too, so while he will relish the ground he isn't totally sure to reverse the form if Look Back Smiling puts his best foot forward again.

Clear Angel (106) wasn't that far behind Look Back Smiling and Thunder Roar in the Spring Mile, either, and is another to add into the mix. He shaped better than the distance beaten suggests on his return from six months off, denied a run under two furlongs out and running on once in the clear to finish a never-nearer fourth. That run should have put an edge on him and he can finish closer now.

Timeform's Analyst Verdict:

Noble Order hasn't seen much of the track in recent years but the style of his comeback success for new trainer Archie Watson at Newcastle in February suggests he can make up for lost time. Pisanello has done well at this time of year previously so he's second choice ahead of Spirit Genie, who should find this a bit easier than the Lincoln.

Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:

108 Noble Order

107 Pisanello

106 Clear Angel

105 Ron O

105 Spirit Genie

105 Titian

104 Shaladar

103 Thunder Roar

103§ Look Back Smiling

102 Legend of Leros
