15:20 Bangor: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

The 15:20 at Bangor on Wednesday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

Bangor stages the latest in the series of regional ‘Nationals’, the North Wales version (15:20), and while it will be a stern test of stamina with heavy going forecast over the near three-and-three-quarter-mile trip, it lacks the quality of some ‘Nationals’ with the top weight on a BHA mark of 119.

Duke of Deception (Timeform weight-adjusted rating 127) ran in a better race than this when runner-up at Aintree last time and can go one better for Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero dropped in grade. Twice a winner over fences, he returned in the autumn with a win over hurdles at Wetherby but ran his best race back over the larger obstacles on his latest start when six and a half lengths second to Snipe at Aintree on Boxing Day, keeping on after leading between three out and just after the next. One of the youngest in this field, he could still be on the up.

Bottom weight Ali Star Bert (130) comes into this in fine form for Shaun Harris and looks likely to post another solid effort upped in trip. His last three runs have all come at Southwell, winning twice and only beaten a nose in between, with his latest success coming when beating Felton Bellevue by three and three-quarter lengths.

Donald McCain’s Gold Emery (125) is another to consider and while he’s yet to win over fences he has few miles on the clock and has found only one too good in three of his last four starts. He showed the benefit of his reappearance when rallying to be beaten a head by Southern Sam in a novices’ handicap at Haydock last time despite a less than foot-perfect round of jumping but this sort of test could well suit him.

Whydah Gally’s (126§) two wins this season have both come at Lingfield, the first one over hurdles, and while he capitalised on a career-low mark over this sort of trip two weeks ago when winning by a length from Jubilee Express, his overall record makes it hard to know if he’ll be in the same form this time.

Stellar Stream (125) is lightly raced over fences, finishing placed in two of his last three starts, and the combination of first-time cheekpieces and the step up in trip could bring out some improvement in him after finishing a plugging-on third behind Twilight Glory at Chepstow last time.

Notachance (129) isn’t the force of old for ‘Hot Trainer’ Alan King but he largely acquitted himself well last term and got back on track to some degree even though the last of five finishers in the Surrey National at Lingfield last time.

Haute Estime (126) won a mares’ novice chase at Warwick last spring but has been disappointing of late and needs a breathing operation since her last run to have done some good as she returns here in a tongue tie.

Top weight Mario de Pail (124x) is still a maiden over the larger obstacles, the fences often getting in his way, and is another who hasn’t been firing of late having returned from a lengthy absence with some better efforts in the autumn.

In Rem (123) got off the mark over fences at Exeter last winter but he’s another prone to mistakes and added to a patchy record with a poor run at the same track last time, though he should be more at home returned to a marathon trip after a break since that run.

Domaine de L’Isle (?) won over a marathon trip at Chepstow last spring but has looked on the downgrade otherwise lately, pulling up in all three of his races this term including from out of the weights in the Welsh Grand National last time.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Duke of Deception is arguably still on the up and the second he produced at Aintree last time came in a stronger race than this, so he takes preference over Ali Star Bert, who bids for his third win from four starts. Gold Emery is also worthy of consideration.
