14:55 Newmarket: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The 14:55 at Newmarket on Tuesday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

It’s something of a low-key start to the Craven meeting and the first day’s racing of the year at Newmarket, but the mile handicap (14:55) looks a competitive contest with 17 runners chasing a first prize of more than £20,000.

Hot Trainer’ Charlie Johnston has a couple of runners here and a bold show is anticipated from Benacre (115) after a good effort on his all-weather return at Wolverhampton last month. He deserved extra credit for his third behind Kingdom Come in the Lincoln Trial as he was in the firing line throughout and did best of those ridden close up. Benacre failed to hold his form last season but his second to Shouldvebeenaring in a listed race at the Guineas meeting here was a good effort which makes him interesting off his current mark.

David O’Meara is also doubly represented, including with last year’s winner Bopedro (117) who carries top weight. He has the ‘Horses For Courses’ flag as he goes well at Newmarket, also winning on the July course last summer and only beaten a length into third behind Astro King in the Cambridgeshire when having some of today’s rivals behind. A couple of runs on the all-weather should have put him spot on for this.

Royal runner Slipofthepen (114p) also looks interesting on his handicap debut for the ‘Hot Trainer’ combination of John & Thady Gosden. He had classic entries this time last year, having started off winning his first two starts at Kempton in good style but was only third of four when odds on for a listed race at Sandown on his final start in May. He remains capable of better with his sights lowered here.

Aerion Power (111) hasn’t had much racing over the last couple of years but made the frame in all four of his races last year, notably when fourth in the Royal Hunt Cup, and ran another good race at Ascot on his final start when third. He’s been gelded over the winter and shouldn’t be far away if fully tuned up.

Majestic (112) represents ‘Hot Trainer’ Jack Channon and has the ‘Horses For Courses’ flag after winning the 2022 Cambridgeshire and running well when dead-heating for fourth in the same race last year. His current mark leaves little margin for error but he could easily have a say if ready first time up, having also finished fourth in the Lincoln on his reappearance last term.

Bodorgan (115) is another who has been gelded since last term, and while he was disappointing on the whole in handicaps in 2023, he resumes on a reduced mark and had looked promising at two when successful in a novice at this track which earns him the ‘Horses For Courses’ flag.

Daysofourlives (111) had Aerion Power back in third when dead-heating with Ouzo at Ascot last September. He also made it two out of two on the all-weather when successful over a mile and a quarter at Chelmsford on his final start last year, and while more is needed off a 4 lb higher mark, he remains lightly raced.

Bajan Bandit (113) won at Haydock and York last summer and ran well in defeat at this track on his final start last year when a rallying length and a quarter second to Catch The Paddy. All those races were over seven furlongs, but he has form at this trip too and shouldn’t be far away.

Obelix (115) ran his best race last term when second to Killybegs Warrior in a valuable mile and a quarter contest at the July meeting. While he was well held on his last couple of starts last year, the handicapper has reacted accordingly and he’s worth a second look on his first start for Julie Camacho having been sold from the Gosdens in the autumn.

Storm Catcher (114) enhanced his really good all-weather strike-rate when landing the odds at Wolverhampton in February and was a bit too fresh at Newcastle after a break last time. However, he looks opposable off his current mark back on turf.

Theoryofeverything (112) started off well last spring, making a winning debut at Doncaster before finishing third in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury, but then found life tougher in handicaps. His third to Chriszoff at Pontefract on his last run was a good effort though and he’s another formerly with the Gosdens and gelded since last year. Now with David O’Meara, he remains of interest.

Benacre’s stablemate Dutch Decoy (114) is another with the ‘Horses For Courses’ flag, having won twice on the July course in 2022 and successful again there last summer. His sixth in the Cambridgeshire was another sound effort and he should come on for his run in the Lincoln last month but could probably do with some respite from the handicapper.

Similar comments apply to Hafeet Alain (112) who was another winner on the July course last summer before going down by a neck to Dutch Decoy over the same course and distance and then won at York in the autumn. His tough-looking mark means others appeal more for win purposes.

Prenup (111) did well in her first season with Jane Chapple-Hyam, winning at Wolverhampton, Newbury and Sandown last year. The drop back to a mile looks a good move, but she’s still 7 lb above her last winning mark so the chances are she’s up against some better-treated rivals.

Canoodled (109) has the ‘Horses For Courses’ flag having gained three of her four career wins at one or other of the Newmarket tracks, her latest success coming last August. She seemed to excel herself when fourth in a listed race at Ascot in the autumn but didn’t confirm that in a similar event in France and looks opposable on balance, although the booking of William Buick is an obvious plus.

Light Speed (113) ran up a hat-trick on the all-weather late last year, but his form has dipped since and, while he’s still lightly raced, he’s making his turf debut in a competitive contest.

Enthused (109) did really well over hurdles last year, winning five times. He didn’t shape badly without his usual cheekpieces (back on here) back on the Flat when third at Lingfield recently and this stiffer track will help.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Not an easy puzzle to solve, with several making significant appeal. Benacre's form dipped following a promising start to last season but he has edged down the weights as a result and there was plenty of encouragement in his reappearance third on the all-weather. He gets the nod ahead of last year's winner Bopedro and unexposed handicap debutant Slipofthepen. Aerion Power and Majestic are effective in these big-field scenarios and should be in the mix, while Bodorgan is also worth a second look.
