14:50 Ayr: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

ArticleImage

The 14:50 at Ayr on Friday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

The Hillhouse Quarry Handicap (14:50) is a long-standing highlight of Ayr’s card on the eve of the Scottish Grand National and this looks a competitive renewal of the two and a half mile contest in which ‘Hot Trainers’ Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls will be bidding to claw back some prize money in the trainers' championship behind Willie Mullins with a first prize of more than £25,000 on offer.

Skelton is doubly represented and brother Harry opts to ride the hat-trick-seeking Jet Plane (155) who has had an excellent season, winning four times in all. After a dip in form over the winter, he’s revived of late and followed a Sandown success in February by taking his form up a notch at Market Rasen nine days ago when making most of the running and winning easily by twelve lengths from William Cody. This is more competitive but Jet Plane looks well in under a 5 lb penalty.

Sue Smith has an improving novice in Prairie Wolf (153p) and he could prove the biggest danger. He got off the mark in a handicap at Doncaster in December and has also won his last two starts in smaller-field novice handicaps with his usual cheekpieces removed. After winning at Catterick in February he followed up at Haydock last time when surviving a bad mistake but comfortably making all to beat Heros by five and a half lengths.

Outlaw Peter (148) has to enter calculations for Paul Nicholls off a 5 lb higher mark than last time. He won four times as a novice hurdler last season and after winning a match on his chasing debut at Newton Abbot in the autumn he got back to winning ways in a handicap at Kempton last time when beating Flegmatik by a length and a quarter and with something in hand as he idled going to the final fence before asserting again on the flat.

Numitor (149) built on the promise of a belated return to action in March when winning a veterans contest at Haydock earlier this month by five lengths from Dubai Days (non-runner here), finding plenty for pressure. He remains feasibly treated on his old form and cannot be ruled out.

Soul Icon (151) is a prolific winner over hurdles, gaining his latest success at Fontwell in October. He’s still looking for a first win over fences but went close last time when a neck second to Persian Time in a novice handicap at Kempton. He’s on a good mark but this is more competitive.

Irish raider Take All (149) won at Wexford last summer and was back to that sort of form when third to Sunnyvilla at Cork last time. Sean Bowen is an eye-catching booking but he isn’t the easiest to win with.

The consistent Nells Son (148) won novice handicaps at Carlisle in October and Kelso last time, when he beat Go Boy twelve lengths, but things will be tougher here from a 7 lb higher mark and he’s yet to win over this far.

General Officer (149) is another consistent type who has won or been placed in all of his novice handicaps this season, successful at Doncaster in December and at Kelso last time when winning by a length from Chasing Fire but he’ll need to find more in this deeper contest outside of novice company.

Jet Plane’s stablemate Heltenham (148) carries top weight, finding himself on a career-high mark after a couple of wins at Newbury in March, beating Kandoo Kid two lengths in the Greatwood Gold Cup before following up over course and distance. However, he was below form in the Red Rum Handicap Chase over two miles at Aintree last week so needs to bounce back quickly from that.

Half Shot (149) contested the Scottish Grand National at this meeting last year and won over just short of three miles at Musselburgh in November, but while he found the test too much in the Grimthorpe Handicap Chase at Doncaster last time in heavy ground, he might find the trip on the sharp side in this company.

Timeform analyst’s verdict

Plenty with claims here but the vote goes to Jet Plane, who is chasing a hat-trick and scored with plenty of authority at Market Rasen last week. The improving Prairie Wolf is feared most ahead of Outlaw Peter in what looks a cracking renewal of this contest.
