14:35 Kempton: Timeform preview and free Race Pass

The 14:35 at Kempton on Monday is available as a free Race Pass, which means logged-in customers can view all our premium comments and ratings.

The Racing TV Mares' Hurdle, a listed event over an extended three miles, is the feature race at Kempton on Monday, and is worth over £14,000 to the winner.

It is a small field and the likely favourite will be the Dan Skelton-trained Kateira (154), who made an excellent start over hurdles last season, winning her first three starts in this sphere.

However, her best effort came when runner-up in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices' Hurdle over two and a half miles at Aintree against the boys, finding a smart rival too strong, but excelling herself up markedly in grade. She didn't get the smoothest run on that occasion, either, but she stayed on well in the closing stages without ever threatening the winner.

Kateira wasn't near that form on her reappearance over two miles in a listed Mares' Hurdle at Wetherby on her reappearance earlier this month, though, proving a disappointment back down in trip and in more testing conditions. Her jumping was rather sloppy in the closing stages but she is entitled to come on for that run. She is 8 lb clear on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, but she is up markedly in trip now trying three miles for the first time, so has her stamina to prove, and may be worth taking on with that in mind.

The one to do so with may be Coquelicot (146), who is stepping up in grade, but progressed well over hurdles last season. She won back-to-back handicaps at up to three miles at Ascot and Sandown around this time last year, and also finished runner-up to a well-handicapped rival over this course and distance.

Coquelicot arrives on the back of an encouraging effort on the Flat at Newmarket, where she was beaten only by another well-handicapped sort who proved better than ever. That outing will have put her spot on for this and she will have no problem with conditions, so it will be no surprise if she puts it up to Kateira who does need to improve on her reappearance.

Another to consider is Sabrina (141) for Paul Nicholls who won this race 12 months ago. She won races at Exeter and Ayr last season, proving better than ever when scoring by five and a half lengths on her final start over a similar trip in April. She impressed by the manner of that victory, sprinting away from her rivals in the closing stages, and she is fully entitled to have a crack at this. Sabrina is a consistent mare who seems sure to launch a bold bid.

Space Voyage (143) won three of her four starts over hurdles last season, albeit in quite weak races, and she was strong in the betting when shaping as if something was amiss on her return and chasing debut at Worcester last month. She returned to form back over hurdles on her handicap debut at Wincanton 16 days ago, going in snatches and leaving the impression she will be suited by three miles. Space Voyage will need to improve but it would be folly to rule her out.

Martha Brae (141) completes the line up and is another who represents the Dan Skelton stable. She was consistent in handicaps last season, winning at Hereford, and she shaped as though she'd come on for the run on her return at Newbury earlier this month. She is another who will need to produce a career-best effort to figure.

Timeform's Analyst Verdict:

Anthony Honeyball has his team in good form so a chance is taken on Coquelicot getting the better of Kateira, who is a clear form pick based on her second in a 2½m Grade 1 novice at Aintree last season but was below that level on her reappearance and also has stamina to prove now stepping up significantly in trip.

Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings:

154 Kateira

146 Coquelicot

143 Space Voyage

141 Martha Brae

141 Sabrina
