Comprador (Timeform rating 74p)
Third, 6f novice, Lingfield, Monday 12 January
Comprador was beaten by an exposed couple of rivals but he was held back by inexperience on debut and would be a very short price to come out on top were the front trio to meet again. Comprador had to be niggled along at various stages and ran green when asked for his effort early in the straight, but the penny started to drop and he finished powerfully to lose out by only a neck and a short head. He should be sharper with this experience to call on and, as a brother to Flying Childers winner Trillium, he looks capable of taking a big step forward.
The Green Man (85)
Runner-up, 1m handicap, Newcastle, Tuesday 13 January
The Green Man has been in excellent order during this all-weather campaign - his first since joining Philip Kirby - and again shaped well when runner-up at Newcastle. The Green Man was typically ridden with patience but the race wasn't run to suit and he was unable to reel in the front runner, Flying Fletcher, who had benefited from dictating a very steady gallop. The Green Man had also finished a place behind Flying Fletcher when third over the same course and distance on his previous outing, looking unlucky not to win on that occasion given how he powered home after meeting trouble in running. He won three of his last five starts in 2025 and it shouldn't be long before he's off the mark this year, especially as his effectiveness between six furlongs and a mile should give connections plenty of options.
Beylerbeyi (109)
Third, 1¼m handicap, Newcastle, Friday 16 January
Beylerbeyi enjoyed a productive campaign in 2025, winning on four occasions, most notably the prestigious Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket in October. Beylerbeyi showed plenty of stamina to win the Cesarewitch over two and a quarter miles, but he's clearly a versatile sort as his three previous wins for the campaign had been achieved at around a mile and a half, and he shaped really well on his return to action over a mile and a quarter at Newcastle. He was held up in a race run at a very steady gallop and was also inconvenienced by meeting some trouble when trying to make headway inside the final furlong, but he kept on well to grab third close home. He was running off a mark 23 lb higher than for his first win of 2025 but still looks fairly treated on the evidence of his reappearance effort.
