Victory Shout (Timeform rating h95)
Runner-up, 2½m handicap hurdle, Wincanton, Wednesday 1 April
Victory Shout was never able to land a blow on the enterprisingly-ridden winner, Prairie Diamond, who opened up a clear lead and essentially won unchallenged, but he proved best of the rest and is worth another chance. Victory Shout was patiently ridden but made rapid headway out wide entering the straight to go into a clear second, still looking like a well-handicapped horse and shaping much better than the others who had been held up. He had landed a gamble on his return from a break at Taunton eight days earlier, looking well suited by the sound surface, and the level of form he showed on the Flat suggests he could still have more to offer over hurdles.
Beylerbeyi (f110)
Third, 2m handicap, Newcastle, Friday 3 April
Beylerbeyi was a beaten favourite in the Marathon on All-Weather Finals Day, but he gave another good account of himself and did well under the circumstances to grab third. He was held up in last and that proved a disadvantage in a race run at a stop-start gallop. He still had the whole field in front of him three furlongs out, but he made good headway to run on into third inside the final 100 yards, without ever threatening to land a blow on the first two who had raced much more prominently. Beylerbeyi failed to win during the all-weather campaign but he ran well to finish placed on all four outings, improving on the form he had shown when successful in the Cesarewitch last season. He's effective at trips between a mile and a quarter and two and a quarter miles, and that versatility should give connections plenty of options.
Brother Walfrid (h120p)
Runner-up, 2m½f maiden hurdle, Fairyhouse, Sunday 5 April
Smart bumper performer Colcannon put a couple of disappointing efforts behind him to belatedly get off the mark over hurdles, doing so in emphatic fashion, but Brother Walfrid shaped well in second and is also one to be positive about. Hurdling debutant Brother Walfrid was no match for Colcannon who tanked his way through the race and soon had matters under control after hitting the front on the bridle before the second last, but he stayed on and proved clear best of the rest. It was encouraging how well Brother Walfrid sustained his effort from a fair way off the pace and he promises to stay longer distances. He's also entitled to be sharper with this outing under his belt.
