Northbound (Timeform rating 72)
Third, 1m½f handicap, Wolverhampton, Monday 23 June
Northbound had finished down the field on his first couple of starts for Roger Fell, but he proved much more competitive at Wolverhampton where he did well to be beaten only a neck and a short head in third. Northbound was ridden patiently and had most of the field still in front of him as they turned into the straight. He was very wide on the bend, covering significantly more ground than most of his rivals, but he stayed on strongly in the straight and only narrowly failed to get there. He was arguably unlucky not to win given the extra ground he covered and is one to be interested in.
Superposition (102)
Runner-up, 1m handicap, Newcastle, Thursday 26 June
Superposition had lost his action when running poorly on turf at Doncaster on his penultimate start, but he resumed his progress back on the all-weather, enhancing his good record on artificial surfaces. Superposition was unable to make it three from three on the all-weather this year, but he ran up to his best behind the Lincoln winner, Godwinson, who now looks worth a crack at a higher level. The winner was also played later in a race run into a headwind that suited those patiently ridden, so Superposition's performance should be viewed positively and he looks well treated on the all-weather.
Caprelo (86)
Sixth, 2m handicap, Newcastle, Saturday 28 June
Kempton winner Caprelo was beaten into sixth in Saturday’s Northumberland Vase but shaped well under a 5-lb penalty, attempting to come from further back than ideal, and is capable of winning another mid-range staying handicap or two this season. Having been a little keen in the early stages, Caprelo was held up in midfield by David Probert before making headway from two furlongs out, staying on strongly in the closing stages and nearest at the finish. Headgear has seemingly benefited Caprelo, his form having gone up a notch since cheekpieces were fitted three runs ago, and he’s one to keep on side.
