Enfjaar (Timeform master rating 118)
Runner-up, 1m2f handicap, Goodwood, Tuesday 30 July
Enfjaar was bidding to follow up his John Smith’s Cup victory at York earlier in the month in the Chesterfield Cup but while he couldn’t quite do so he produced another smart effort from a 6 lb higher mark which only strengthens the view that he’ll prove himself a pattern performer before long. He also emerged with a huge amount of credit as he was asked to come from a good bit further back in a race that wasn’t run at anything like as strong a tempo as the John Smith’s Cup. Making headway from under two furlongs out, he closed all the way to the line to go down by a neck to Take Heart who had finished only eighth behind him at York, conceding 10 lb to the winner. This proves Enfjaar’s effectiveness on good to firm ground and added another string to his bow in terms of tactical versatility too.
Power Of Destiny (97p)
Runner-up, 1m2f handicap, Goodwood, Wednesday 31 July
Sir Michael Stoute’s Power of Destiny shaped as though almost certainly the best handicapped of these fillies in what was a competitive contest, with things not panning out so well for her in a modestly-run affair as it did for the winner. After racing freely in mid-division, she was denied a clear run over two furlongs out but made headway once switched and stayed on after hanging left approaching the final furlong to go down by a head to Al Anood. Having only made her debut in May, it’s still early days for Power of Destiny, a King Power-owned daughter of Sea The Stars, who was making her handicap debut here and looks one to have on side next time.
EBT's Guard (99)
Runner-up, 1m handicap, Goodwood, Thursday 1 August
EBT's Guard has progressed well this season and he took his form up another notch when runner-up in the concluding mile handicap at Goodwood on Thursday. EBT's Guard was arguably unfortunate not to win at Goodwood as he was going well when he had to wait for a gap two furlongs out which meant he was around four lengths adrift of the eventual winner when finally getting into the clear 200 yards out. He couldn't quite get on terms with the winner but he finished with a real flourish to get to within three-quarters of a length which suggests that he's still ahead of the handicapper and capable of winning off similar marks when granted better luck.
