Selenic (Timeform rating 80p)
Sixth, 1m3f fillies’ handicap, Southwell, Wednesday 6 January
Making her handicap debut after just two starts early last year, Selenic was less exposed than the rest but seemed totally unsuited by the slow gallop which rather negated the longer trip. However, she was staging a rally when chopped off in the final furlong, not completely out of it at the time, and was clearly much better than the bare result. Held up following an awkward start, Selenic was outpaced under three furlongs out but keeping on when denied a run and couldn’t recover, finishing sixth of the seven behind Live Each Day. A winner over a mile at Kempton last year, Selenic is bred to be suited by middle distances and is one to look out for.
Flicka's Girl (61)
Fourth, 6f classified stakes, Chelmsford, Thursday 8 January
A low-grade minor event that was run in driving rain, but it was run at a sound pace and produced a good overall time which suggests it's quite strong form for the level. It was the first time Flicka's Girl had raced at this level and she signalled a return to form is imminent, taking a step back in the right direction. It's likely she would have finished even closer had things panned out differently as she travelled better than most but was denied a run entering the straight before finishing well when switched to the outside. Flicka's Girl won a handicap from a BHA mark of 54 in the summer and is capable of winning race of this nature.
Cinammon Coco (87)
Third, 1½m handicap, Dundalk, Friday 9 January
Cinammon Coco had run poorly over jumps on his previous outing but he returned to form on the all-weather at Dundalk where he did well under the circumstances to be beaten only half a length and a head in third. A steady gallop meant it paid to be handy and the first two home occupied those positions through most of the race. Cinammon Coco, in contrast, was held up last of all but made good headway towards the inside early in the straight and was never nearer than at the line. Cinammon Coco had won a maiden on his only previous outing at Dundalk and could still do better on the all-weather.
